    C02 Purging

Thanks for all your suggestions. I went with the co2 keg charger. A 16g co2 cartridge will fill about a 6.56L space at 1 atmosphere. I normally don't have this much shoulder so I don't expect to be doing this that often. Thanks!

    C02 Purging

I do think mead is pretty hardy. In this case the yeast won't work on the fruit sugars - I have stabilized the mead to prevent re-fermentation. I was questioning how much oxidation would occur over the 7 days.

    C02 Purging

Another good option! I honestly considered a similar option - using a clean whipping cream dispenser to do just that. :P This is cheaper though. If I had the cash, I would just invest in kegging equipment. The keg charger is a step in that direction.

    C02 Purging

I am considering something like this. I will have to see what price I can get them for. as I have a fair bit of head space. If I was thinking about it I probably should have bought another smaller carboy - might have been cheaper. oh well, live an learn.

    C02 Purging

Maybe I should also mention that will be racking off the fruit in about 7 days. I don't plan on leaving it any longer than that.

    C02 Purging

I need a bit of fees back. So I split a batch of mead into two carboys because I was adding a fair amount of fruit and really didn't want to lose 1/4 or more of product. Now I have the problem of way to much shoulder space in my carboys (6 gal and a 3 gal). So I figure I need to purge this...

    Bottle washer and sanitizer project

I am currently building one too and had a similar thought in regards to the plastic vs copper. I did look at pex plastic - the tubing is cheaper but the cost of the fittings add up quickly resulting in it being more expensive. (Might be cheaper if you can get bulk/contractor prices?) I also...

    Concrete Roller Mill

Ugh! Not enough build time during the day, :P I know, I'll quite my job and just make beer all day... I too am eager to get to the malt mill project - it is on my top three project list (1 and 2 are on going).

    Concrete Roller Mill

Well when I came across the concrete roller idea and builds, many people are worried that concrete will get into the beer, effect the water and beer. Then you would be potentially ingesting it. I'm not overly concerned myself - more wondering about how likely the risk is.

    Concrete Roller Mill

    Cool!

    Concrete Roller Mill

Because building stuff is fun. $99 US is $140 Canadian Dollars. And how high is the risk of contamination? Considering the grain bed, the rollers do not hit anything, and grain should not chip a roller? Contamination was one of the topics I hope can be discussed here.

    Concrete Roller Mill

I hope it goes well too. My thought with buhrstone mills is that I may end up crushing the grain too much? A HPGR also has the benefit of easily being made to fit on a bucket. Either way, I'll come up with a couple designs first. Cheers! :mug:

    Wort chiller idea...

That reminds me, I did see some builds for a recirculating immersion chiller. They create that whirlpool effect and really improve efficiency. Easy to add to an immersion chiller at a later date. Or can be done just by recirculating the wort and adding a ball value to your pot

    Concrete Roller Mill

Oh, I plan on doing this. It is project #3 on the list right now, in the middle of a chiller and mash tun build. Just like to draw on as many sources of info as I can.

    Concrete Roller Mill

Not sure yet. As an engineer this is one of those things things that I plan on building for myself and possibly building and selling if there is local interest. As long as I can build it for under $80 (rough guess) I will be happy. I have some materials which I can use, so really, the major cost...

    Concrete Roller Mill

OK, so I've been researching DIY mills. My beer allowance is not that large and cannot spend a great deal on equipment - besides, I can build some fairly decent equipment. Back to DIY mills. I've read enough to guess is a bit of debate regarding concrete rollers. On one side we have the...

    Wort chiller idea...

Agreed! You can increase the cooling ability of immersion chiller with some creativity! I've have seen some fancy coil designs and almost makes me want to start my immersion chiller over again. Hahaha - always start making something and hardly get it done before I'm on the next version. I...

    Wort chiller idea...

Might as well just build a counter flow chiller and save the excess water for cleaning up, your washer, or putting it in a rain barrel for your plants and garden. As I understand it, for 5 gal batches or less, an immersion chiller will work just fine. When you get to larger batches - 10 gal...

Cost: All Grain vs. Extract vs. Kit Brewing

Thanks Arnobg and everyone else for your input. I'll keep the bulk buying in mind. How much of a grain do you guys buy at time?

Cost: All Grain vs. Extract vs. Kit Brewing

Hello! I'm moving to all grain brewing, I'm in the middle of the transition. That is final, nothing is going to stop me (well, maybe my wife will make me do it outdoors...). I'm just making a few pieces of equipment. With that being said, I've done mostly kit brewing, and kit modification...
