    Completed Brew Room

Excellent! Is that a vent hood over the BK? The last thing I added to my electric system was a set of hooks to hang my hoses on to drain after cleaning them. You need to post pictures about every year to show the add-ons as you brew. I guess I built mine in a shared space with the laundry room...

    Automated temp control suggestions

Just added the ITC 308 WIFI and a 25W fish tank heater under the fermenter for heat. Works okay for two glass carboys or one bucket. Covered with a dark sweat shirt. Just used a box fan for the cooling if needed but in the winter the room is in the low 60's. (Put 1" Styrofoam with foil covering...

Are milk frothers suitable for aerating wort?

I just finished a test to determine if the expense of oxygen injection in wort would justify the cost. I brewed an 8 gallon NEIPA, 1.054. I used a US05 in a starter that was started from 800 ml of wort and 800 ml spring water. I added light DME to bring the SG to 1.040. About 30+ hours on a stir...

    Temp control start to finish.

My brewing has dropped off the last two years so it is getting harder to justify large investments. I just try to make my changes to the brew process the most cost effective way as I can. Last week I had four fermenters going at the same time. A white wine that should be about 58 F, a Pinot...

Name That Skyline - Picture Game

    Is that in Germany?

    Temp control start to finish.

I have all those and the Hops book as well. My BOOK collection is almost 30 books now. Some I will never read cover to cover but they are a great reference. It always seems like I get my answer but not the why from the "how to brew" books and the more technical books are a tuff read for a...

    Temp control start to finish.

In the past I would just put a glass carboy on the basement floor covered with a sweat shirt to keep the light out, and hope for the best. This has worked to make beer for almost 30 years. Now that I am not working 50-60 hours a week I am getting more time to play with the fermentation temps...

    Temp control start to finish.

With my BCS I control the BK, HLT and Mash with a HERMS coil in the HLT. All works well. I just added an Ink Bird ITC-308-WIFI with a 25W heater. I have been able to set the temp to 66 degrees and it tracks within 1-2 degrees. My question is now that I can now control the brew process Mash to...

This is my choice of Skyline. Great with a good ale!

Vitamin C - The Game Changer?

4 mg per 5 gallons or there abouts. We would add to get the PH to between 5.2 and 5.1 but not below 4.8. I don't think it matters much. when I've forgot to add it the beer taste good still.

Vitamin C - The Game Changer?

When are you adding the AA? What is the O.G. of your wort when you package the wort? I've only used AA in the 2nd sparge to lower the PH to prevent tannin extraction.

    Small grind effects on O.G.

Yes, the round 10-gallon big orange cooler with a false bottom. The bag was suggested by someone to speed up clean up and is works great. During the sparge I recirculate the wort through a HERMS coil in the HLT. First sparge takes about 55 minutes. The second 45 minutes with a lower PH water at...

    Small grind effects on O.G.

My efficiency jumped a bit with the batch size and how I mashed. With a pale ale I could see 85%, but on some porters only 65%. I have varied my thickness from 1.25 to 1.75 qts per pound depending on the time I had to brew for the day. If I planned a double brew day a thinner batch makes the...

Vitamin C - The Game Changer?

About 30 years ago the old man who showed me how to homebrew put ascorbic acid in his sparge water. he told me it was to lower the PH. This was to keep the grain husk from buggering the beer. I never was sure what that was, but all I know was I didn't want buggers in my beer! I now think he...

    Small grind effects on O.G.

I just changed up my milling and mashing at the suggestion on a blog from person who knows more than me. I milled down to .030 and used a BIAB to line my 10 gallon mash tun. Because I had a fear of a stuck mash I threw in a couple cups of rice hulls. This is the fourth of fifth time I've brewed...

    Temperature Controllers

FYI. When doing my resurch on specs for heating and cooling I found an on-line calculator that helped me size the parts. https://bloglocation.com/art/water-heating-calculator-for-time-energy-power It saved me from getting an undersized heater.

    Temperature Controllers

Not sure of your set up but I am building a chiller/heating set up for my fermentation using the Inkbird ITC-308 Digital Temperature Controller. it is a 2-Stage Outlet Thermostat that provides Heating and Cooling Modes. It has a single probe with two out puts. I have a Heater pad under my...
