    Grainfather!!

No. In fact I found when using a hop basket that very small particles got through which clogged the filter. Without using a basket and throwing hops in The whirlpool makes a filter of hop material that wort can flow through. My issue seems to be the pump. Seeing if anyone else has had issues

    Grainfather!!

Having some issues with my CFC, interested in others’ input. I was occasionally having problems with the pump not seeming to be able to pump wort through the CFC. Wasn’t clogged, worked fine with the recirc arm. I started doing a whirlpool at the end of boil which helped for a while. Now...

    Grainfather!!

To make it easier to push down the bottom plate keeping the seal on do this: Open your crushed grain bag and put the mash cylinder without the plate pushed down in the bag. Take some grain and rub down the inner surface of the cylinder. The grain dust will lightly coat the cylinder making it...

    Plastic vs Stainless Fermenters

Stainless is way to go. Even those ultra hard plastic fermenters like above will scratch eventually and nooks and crannies for bacteria etc develop. In that case you may be buying another instead of the stainless which will last your whole brewing career. When buying new equipment I’m always...

best DRY yeast for a NEIPA?

My goal is to consume all beer ASAP so no prob with that. I’ve been using BRY-97 for west coast ipa and have enjoyed. Pretty flocculent not best for NEIPA., will try the S04 to see how works

    Danstar west coast/bry 97

It is supposed to be highly flocculent and its characteristics on my series of one seemed that way. Was a new recipe though so hard to tell. Will do some of my old US-05 recipes with it to compare. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong...I would think that more yeast flocculating out of...

    Danstar west coast/bry 97

Kent Goldings IPA with BRY-97 turned out great, and fermentation was very clean (which was whole reason to use in first place, let hops shine). Will start doing some of my old west coast ipa recipes with US-05 with the BRY-97 to evaluate further.

    Grainfather!!

Frequently I throttle the pump to prevent flow down overflow pipe, although many have said does not matter will still get flow through the mash even if going down overflow. Occasionally I have been able to run full flow completely thru the mash. I also always use rice hulls which helps...

    Grainfather!!

This post Regards clogging of pump, especially using CFC at end of brew. Wanted to add to GF page: I had posted a question some time ago and appreciated responses. Also did a lot of trials on best way to handle the above issue. I experienced clogging of my pump during cooling with CFC which...

    Danstar west coast/bry 97

How are people finding the flavor when using BRY-97? I keep seeing “sweet” and “malt forward” in the threads. I used this for IPA with massive East Kent Goldings because I wanted the hops to shine and anticipated very dry product from its marketing. Grain bill designed and mashed for high...

    Grainfather!!

Interesting. Do you use a hop spider or just throw all hops in boil? Pellets or whole cone? I wonder if my hop spider/basket lets out only small particles which are more likely to clog the filter. Possibly better off not using basket?

    Grainfather!!

Do you whirlpool and let sit for 15 min before turning on pump? I was having pump issues and GF support recommended that to me. Even with using a hop spider I had hop debris coating my filter

    Grainfather!!

Appreciate it Ed. I have also noticed the wort inflow and outflow tubing is very susceptible to pinching. Good point. I have been pretty careful about that. Also setting the CFC on a keg next to GF also a good idea. It’s pretty annoying on top of the GF unit and hurts access to the boil...

    Grainfather!!

Great thread, thanks to all contributors. Bought my GF a year ago and it’s been fantastic, done about 25 batches. Without info from you all probably wouldn’t have made the plunge. I’ve been through the thread and found some info but not an answer to this exact question/situation: My pump...

That confirms what I was thinking about altering my approach. Thanks!

    Grainfather!!

Interested to see what you all do: I've done 6 brew days on GF. Love it but also looking at how to improve. Do you all heat your mash water to desired temp and dough in? Or do you heat water to a temp above anticipating that grain will lower temp and THEN drop your set temp to the desired...

    Grainfather!!

I took a wooden doll rod, marked it to 4, 5, 6, 7 gallons. I just dip it while sparging and know exactly where I'm at
