    Yeast terminology confusion

would it be easier (since i only ferment in one primary glass carboy and no secondary) to just wash the yeast out of the leftover sediment in my primary and not even worry about splitting starters with my new vial of yeast and such? I don't stray much from my normal recipes as I am a brown Ale...

    Yeast terminology confusion

ok cool that definitely sheds some light on the situation. So if I make a starter that i intend on splitting the slurry into more than one portion..... A) Do I add the whole amount of the vial of yeast to the initial starter? B) How many "slurry portions" can i make off this starter? is...

    Yeast terminology confusion

Noob here. I have Papazian's JOHB 3rd edition and it seems very vague and confusing on certain parts of dealing with yeast. 1) What is the difference between culturing and propagating yeast? 2) can I take a bottle of WhiteLabs WLP001 (liquid) yeast and (not sure of the terminology) make...

    aluminum kettle question. pic attatched

Cool thank you guys very much for all the info! Man I scrubbed that thing literally 15 different times throughout the day with soapy SOS steel wool pads and rinsed really well with lots of hot water so im pretty sure I got all the oil and residue out. At least I hope I did cause my arms are...

    aluminum kettle question. pic attatched

I'm not sure but I don't have any oxyclean or PBW anyway. I hit it really hard with steel wool and just now finished boiling water in it for an hour. Does this look correct? There's definitely a dark (almost black in some areas) look to the inside now. Do I just wipe it down and leave it that way?

    aluminum kettle question. pic attatched

so i have been killing myself all day long trying to clean up this old 30 quart aluminum turkey fryer i plan on using as a boiling kettle. I first tried non-abrasive cleaning with absolutely no luck at all and then finally resorted to steel wool. It got a great majority of all the tough stains...

can i use this for a boil pot?

ok cool. Yeah now that u said that i forgot that when i found it there was a turkey "hanger" (and the grabber hook to pull it out of hot oil when done) sitting inside it that was made of steel. Thats where the rust came from for sure. thanks for pointing that out. so i plan on buying a...

can i use this for a boil pot?

So i found this OLD turkey frying pot (30 quarts to the very tip top) with propane burner and stand in my garage storage space (didn't even realize i owned one hahahaha). Its really nasty inside with what seems to be rust and other caked on crud. I tried using non-abrasive sponges and soft...

here's my latest creation. What ya think?

oh cool yeah thats a great price and will be big enough to accommodate enough bottle holes for a 5-gallon batch if not more. The one thing to be aware of (If you are gonna use the bin for sanitizing as well) is that the bigger size tubs requires more sanitizing liquid to raise it to a level that...

here's my latest creation. What ya think?

i just seen that both wal-mart and home depot have the 30-35 gallon storage bins on christmas clearance for around $20. As long as u dont mind the christmas color its a cheap way to make an all-in-one equipment sanitizing bucket/bottle drainer.

    Clone beer recipe book question

so i have a "clone" beer recipe book i just bought and i am a bit confused about their recipes. It has the option of making recipes by extract(w/specialty grains), all grain, and also "Mini-Mash". On the Mini-mash method you are basically doing the same thing as a partial-mash but substituting a...

here's my latest creation. What ya think?

i think i'm gonna try that now that u mentioned it. thanks for the input and great idea as it will then accommodate enough bottles for a 5 gallon batch.

here's my latest creation. What ya think?

yeah thats exactly what i do as well. I usually make up a couple gallons star sans in my cleaned glass carboy then rack with auto siphon(to sanitize tubes and siphon) into the storage bin for sanitizing all other equipment. its an all-in-one sanitizing bottle draining/drying station. thanks...

here's my latest creation. What ya think?

Noob here so hopefully i'm not doing something that may compromise the quality of my homebrew. Let me know what u think about this. By no means am i claiming this is the cheapest most effective way of making something like this but I already had the storage bin at home and wasn't using it for...

    Temperature control question

Hahahahaha a lil' krausen cuddle in bed. Ok cool thanks for the info. What temp (on the cold end) in particular does the fermentation for a top fermenting ale yeast slow/dormant?

    Yikes! Temperature control question

So My house heater broke and it's supposed to get down to 35•-40• tonight and I'm worried about the temp of my 5-gallon carboy brews (ESB and Graff/hard cider). I imagine the internal house temp may get down to the 50's• and I am wondering if it's gonna affect the fermentation activity and if so...
