    "Grain vs. Extract" Batch Prices

I'd be willing to bet my all grain brew day is less than 30 min longer than yours. It's your choice to brew extract and that is great. But, please don't think that brewing has to take all day. I am usually done within around 3 hours... I agree fully about your quality part.

    Hobo Wine?

as far as pouring... I'd try to siphon it off so you don't oxidize your "Hobo Wine" and the micro will work as long as you keep it boiling for a good 10 min... might have to reduce the power settings on your micro. But, doing that with a plastic bottle might melt it.

    Hobo Wine?

wine yeast is 50 cents a pkg... you are going to get some awful swill with whatever you're making using regular bread yeast and grape juice. If I were you i'd follow EdWort's Apfelwine recipe (use the search feature)and sub grape juice if you really wane grape flavor.

What shape of cooler is best for a MLT?

use one that holds water and doesn't leak... there isn't a right or wrong. I've used bazookas and false bottoms both get around 70% without mash recirc and 80% with mash recirc. The shape doesn't matter either. rectangular, drink cooler, cube. no difference. I would suggest getting something...

    Black IPA suggestions?

If you have an IPA recipe you already like... just add a half pound of dehusked carafa III to it.

    gypsum??

You might think about just adding more hops... I have different water than you, but I have found that trying to use water salts as some magic trick to make beers hoppy just hasn't worked for me. I just double my hop addition at 60 and mission accomplished. Or, you can go get a chemistry degree...

    "Grain vs. Extract" Batch Prices

In chatting with my friends at the LHBS it sounds like prices are back up after being way down over the last few years. Bulk rates anyway... There seems to be a lot of mark up if buying retail/small quantities. That is pretty resourceful though buying many pallets at a time.

    Great opportunity......

It obviously works for the masses... They also have as someone else mentioned the ability to be creative with 22ish different breweries/brewers. Is there better beer, sure. There are a lot better products out there. But, they have a model that works and has flourished to a scale that most...

    Weight of the Mash....

might be the sparge water... I know i've accidently used boiling or close to water to sparge with once and I got an astringent beer...

    Great opportunity......

I agree with this, but... many professional mirco breweries are just larger versions of home brew systems. google McMenamins breweries. They make good beer on equipment that is inferior to many home brewers systems. If you know your process and are proficient and confident in your home brewing...

    "Grain vs. Extract" Batch Prices

he said he gets 2 row for 21.00 a bag... that's nearly half your price. i get it for 29.00 a bag and i live less than 10 miles for GWM. the prices he was quoting was beyond cheap...

2 Slap Packs of WYEAST 1098

to much malt extract imo. extracts have an inherent amount of unfermentable sugars. I would drop 3lbs of extract and replace with corn sugar if you really want the high grav. You might consider, .25 -.50lb honey malt, biscuit, munich, special B, or something else to add some depth of flavor. I...

    I created a Monster!

looks like a strong pale ale to me. hopefully it wont be too hot, but if it is just let it age for a bit.

    Question Natural carbonation.

Depends on the beer and if it is done fermenting. some people bottle early and finish in the bottles. in my opinion, that is asking for trouble by means of bottle bombs... as for kegging, yes the co2 carbonates the beer. it takes 48 hours to a couple weeks to carb using co2, and min 10 days -...

How is this for a cheap beginner setup?

you dont need a blow off tube for your carboy as you said you will be using the bucket as a primary if you are planning on using the carboy as a primary fermenter you are setting yourself up for a MESS! Blow off tube or not. you need head space in your fermenter. So, with a 3 gal fermenter you...
