Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

Update: 10 days later I took a gravity reading. It's still fairly high at 1.02 from a starting 1.052. But its tasting great. Very toasty, rich, chocolate and a hint of smoke. Pretty excited for this one.

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

"I thought the way you puréed *insert whatever ingredient is most difficult here* was absolutely brilliant." Production times would just take too long, but a beer contest that set brewers up with some kind of challenge would be a lot of fun. Film the brewing process and then cut to the tasting...

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

Standard Chopped judge response: "I really like what you did with the hop bursting and choice of smoked malt, all in all this is a perfect beer.......BuT......you only gave me 12 ounces and I clearly wanted 16 ounces. You've been chopped"

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

Oh man, having her pick the grain amount would be fun, but she has no concept of what makes what. Could end up with 10 pounds of black patent and 1 pound of base. If I did it again I might combine this exercise with a bit of math homework. She gets 3 pounds to split any way she wants with any...

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

The first runnings idea would have been great. But, its fermenting away. I'll let her try a sip for sure, she'll probably never want beer again.

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

You know, there is a reality tv contest for pretty much every culinary possibility already. Beer would not be too far fetched. 4 weeks of commercials during fermentation would be a bummer.

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

Ya, I had her pick the grains she wanted first and then did a bit of quick mental calculations on amounts without being to exacting. Brew smelled super toasty, and just the 4oz of smoked malt was very evident.

Experiment: Let my daughter pick the grains

Thought I would share an interesting brew day and get your thoughts on a recipe. My daughter loves coming to the LHBS with me to measure grains. So, she asked if she could pick the grains one day and see what kind of beer it makes. (PSA: I do not let her have any beer, she just likes the...

    Yeast Harvesting

Recently I have been harvesting one jar of yeast when racking to the bottling bucket rather than the whole washing process. 1. Boil a mason jar and it's lid 2. Sanitize your racking assembly as normal 3. Before racking to the bottling bucket place the racking pick up valve deep into the trub...

Idea for grabbing yeast from primary

Good point host. I have tried not to rack my beers unless dry hopping/fruiting. But, this is perhaps the best solution. I figured if I could pump a liter or two of trub and yeast from the cake that I could wash it and leave the week old beer alone to rest.

Idea for grabbing yeast from primary

Let me know if this is a horrible idea. But I brewed up a blonde with WL002 last weekend and I am thinking of doing a new batch this weekend. The blonde will be mostly done fermenting, but I want to let sit sit for at least another 7 days. Is there any reason I could not syphon off some of...

    Floating clumps of yeast

Howdy, I am experiencing something odd with a curent batch of IPA. A few factors could be contributing here, so bare with me: Issue: In primary on day 10, terminal gravity has been hit and there is a chunky layer of flotsam floating at the top which will not sink. It looks like a...

    Can't get clear runnings

Thanks for the great tips. Curious, what off flavors should I look for that might be created by letting too much grain particulate into the kettle?

    Can't get clear runnings

That makes sense. Vorloft (sp?) more beer at a time. Thanks all.

    Can't get clear runnings

Howdy, I am 8 or 9 brews into my AG set-up. I have a 10g round rubbermaid cooler with a steel braid. I can not seem to ever get clear runnings. Here is what I do: 1. Dough in as usual and wait 2. Slowly drain first runnings into a plastic cup and then return to the top as carefully as...

chocolate rasberry imperial stout very tart

Recently brewed a raspberry porter and think its one of my best beers to date. Based on suggestions from a fellow brewer I pureed the raspberries, but did not boil. I think this can alter the flavor you are looking for too drastically. Instead, I threw the (frozen) berries into a well sanitized...

Need Major Help with Blueberry Stout!!!

10 pounds is a ton of fruit. For a 5 gallon batch, I found 1.5 pounds adds a nice, subtle flavor.

    Arrogant Bastard Inspired Recipe Critique

All of the AB clones I have seen use Chinook only. I brewed one a month ago and it's tasty.
