    Apparent attenuation of 90% question

Just a thought, I checked my hydrometers in distilled water to see how they did and one was off by .004 . Definitely worth checking if you haven't.

    Brewery Tour

In the PA area I would definitely check out Weyerbacher. edit: Couple other tips from my brew trip planning. If you haven't already check the states your heading through, or even certain regions and see if they have a brewers association or beer trail of some sort. Many times you can find a...

What size rectangular cooler for mash tun?

40 qts should be plenty for almost all 5 gallon batches. You can always check specific recipes on the can I mash it calc from the Green Bay Rackers http://www.rackers.org/calcs.shtml I have used my 10 gal rubbermaid to mash 15 lbs for 6 gallon batches with plenty of room.

    2nd all grain batch

I hear ya man, absolutely in the same boat. I did 3 extract brews as well before making a tun and the like. My first beer was essentially kit instructions with a little clarification from the LHBS. Since then I have read 6 or 7 books on brewing and though they are great resources and especially...

    2nd all grain batch

Congrats, I just did my second all grain over the weekend. I got higher than expected efficiency the first time, and slightly lower this weekend. Both within .004 so no worries, but it must feel great to hit one spot on!

What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

From my earliest drinking days I preferred Sam and Guinness to the light lagers. It wasn't until a friend brought a growler of Lake Placid's Ubu to a poker game that I really went off the deep end. Love the draft version of that beer to this day, and am forever indebted to my buddy for sharing...

    Type of Water?

Not weird at all actually. Water absolutely affects the taste of beers and famous brewing regions are often influenced by their water make up. Check out the brew science section of the forum if you're looking for more info on water. There's also some info in Palmer's How to Brew on the subject...

New to Homebrew in Albany/Troy Area

Hey I just started a few months back myself, from the Schenectady area. We're lucky to have a couple of homebrew shops around as well as some clubs. The shop closest to you would probably be Homebrew Emporium in East Greenbush and then up the northway a bit is the Saratoga Zymurgist. I've got...

What came in the mail for you today?

Got something similar today for an IPA we plan on brewing this weekend. My brew buddy designed the recipe and ordered 15 lbs of 2 row and 16 various oz of Centennial, Simcoe and Amarillo. Little bit of amarillo going in around 40 mins and everything else comes late and probably about 4 0z mixed...

    good brewing books?

Yes, Designing Great Beers, by Ray Daniels has been a great resource for creating recipes though some of the info is beggining to become dated. If you brew IPA's or are interested in the style Mitch Steeles book titled IPA is a great read with both history and modern techniques. I also own the...

    Double IPA versus Imperial IPA

Of course it's not. Extra IPA is an intermediate between a regular IPA and an Imperial/Double. But really it's just Sierra Nevada marketing speak for their Torpedo.

    4 batches bad after bottling

Bottled my fourth batch this weekend. Prepped all morning including boiling up my priming sugar. Started filling my first bottle when I looked over to the stove, and there it was. Luckily I saved face and just had one 12 0z with no priming sugar in it that I chilled and split with my brew buddy...

OG level lower than what beer smith says

Describing your mashing process including equipment might help diagnose the issue here too.

    Homebrewing....What's in a name?

Charlie went on to talk about how perception has changed and I would have to agree. I began homebrewing last year after almost 3 years of craft beer obsession. I frequently met people at breweries and craftier bars that homebrewed and they would egg me on to try brewing myself. I got to taste...

When to add hops for maximum flavor potential?

In my tasting experience s-05 seems to brings out that fruity pebble like flavor from Centennial. I'm always asking what yeast when I taste IPA's with that flavor and the answer has always been s-05 or a proprietary house yeast. Best of luck with your brewing, cheers!

    Recipe advice for an IPA

I recently did a SmasH with Fawcett Optic and Mosaic hops. I had previously done a 2.5 full boil extract batch with 4 0z of Simcoe/Amarillo that slightly under attenuated but was nowhere near as hoppy as I hoped. This go round I used 1 0z to bitter and then 9 0z split between the 15, 10, 5 and...

    Lower Final Gravity Than Expected

I scored my Thermapen through an open box sale last month for $74. Definitely worth looking into, links are occasionally posted around the web as thermoworks keeps these sales somewhat hidden. No warranty but mine has worked perfect so far. Sent from my HTC One mini using Home Brew mobile app

My Bottle Capper Broke! How Screwed Am I?

Had a Red Baron shatter a bottle on my 2nd bottling day. My buddy was capping for me and when he went to cap a 12 oz former Harpoon bottle it shattered the neck off. Luckily no one was hurt and we were able to just throw out the bottle. I avoid Harpoon bottles now, just in case, though it was...

New to the hobby, from Albany NY area

Hey there, just getting into the hobby and have been lurking around here for the past month or so. Been into beer since 08 and got pretty serious about what I liked to drink for the past couple years. Had my first brew day 8 days back with a basic ale pail and Brewer's Best APA extract kit. Had...
