    Question about lager yeast starter

Yeast viability depends on how fresh it is. As in when it was manufactured. The date is on the vile. If fresh, and no stir plate, you'll need 2 viles minimum. I would use 1 quart start for each vile. That should get you close to optimum pitch rate. That said, my first lager, I pitched 1...

Anyone ever use EMT instead of copper to cool beer lines?

Oh, doesn't look like you're running liquid through the pipe....never mind

Anyone ever use EMT instead of copper to cool beer lines?

Some EMT are hot zinc coated for corrosion protection. This could poison you.

Anyone ever use EMT instead of copper to cool beer lines?

Electric Metallic Tubing, I believe, has zinc in it. It's my understanding that zinc can be poisonous .

Once and for all...is a secondary neccesary??

Hopefully, here is some constructive information. I recently racked a bavarian Hefeweizen to secondary and the yeast cake smelled like soap. This was only after 6 days in primary. However fermentation went went fast. According to "How to Brew", by John J. Palmer, "If you leave the beer in...

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

Well, I'd say I'm not shooting for a soap flavor in my beer, so it's an 'off flavor' I chose to avoid. This is the first time I actually smelt soap from the yeast cake. I suppose an IPA could hide it better. Thanks for the caution anyway.

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

Great discussion and thank you everyone for the good information. For the record, I racked to secondary to get the beer off the trub so that it didn't pick up any off flavors. After racking, I smelt the leftover yeast etc. and it had a mild soapy smell to it. So I'm glad I went to secondary...

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

Krausen dropped several days ago. It was a rapid fermentation. I just moved it back to fermentation spot and it stopped bubbling. I saw yeast junks diving, not much though. I'll take your advice and wait until I can get a few readings. Thanks

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

Know if it's done, that is.

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

I thought my beer was done in Primary (without Hydrometer reading, bubbles only), so I positioned my carboy to rack to a secondary. In the process, I think I moved some yeast around. Now my airlock is bubbling again. Any harm in racking to secondary before knowing if it's some?

Whole versus Pellet Hops..matter of preference?

I wonder if pre-soaking the whole hops would help with the absorption and sinking of the hops?
