Long-lasting beer for keg number two

Brew a lager and tap it young. As time passes, you’ll be layering it and can pull a pint to see how long is your ideal lagering time.

Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber High/Low Temps

The 5 degree differential doesn't present a problem with temp overshoot at all. In fact, depending on the ambient temperature, it can lead to undershoot problems. The wort can get as much at 2*F colder than set temp. I've since settled on 3 degrees cooler air than the desired wort temp. With 8...

Chest Freezer Fermentation Chamber High/Low Temps

I’m now running a fan inside the chest freezer constantly. After adding a collar and moving the air temp probe up to the collar, I ended up freezing about 15 gallons of beer that shot up and out of the safety pressure release valve. Lessons learned. There was about a 20*F difference between...

    Changing 1/4" barb to 5/16"

Get a ball lock with a male flare (MFL) fitting. Then you put a 5/16” barb female flare (FFL) swivel on the tubing. That said, many (including) myself use 3/16” tubing on 1/4” barbs as the ID of the fittings are closer that of the tubing. Save the 5/16” tubing for your gas lines and use it...

Initial impressions of the Ss Brew Tech 10G Infusion mash tun

I placed a fine stainless mesh (240 micron) over the false bottom and it keeps all the bits out. However, after the vorlauf (I recirculate full period), the wort gets cloudy when the grain bed at the false bottom runs dry. I’m fly sparging now, so I just add and extra quart of sparge water...

SS Mesh Basket + mash recirculation

I've got a 18" diameter mash tun with a false bottom that seals really well along the outside edge. I placed a 240 micron stainless steel screen over the false bottom and do not have any flow issues as long as my grist is less than 25 lbs. My flow rate is 0.5 gallons per minute. My crush is a...

Will ~4.3 grams of Pickling Lime neutralize 12 Oz. of a typical Acid Malt?

Wouldn’t that twang you’re looking for be related to the sourness (low pH)? If you raise the pH back up, wouldn’t that remove the twang? I’m thinking this is what’s behind scotty’s first post in this thread.

BIAB Newbie - water / grain ratio questions :)

As doug293cz stated above, sparging does increase effeciency. If it’s effeciency you’re chasing, you will peak that parameter when the volume you leave in the kettle matches the volume you leave in the sparge. You can leverage the research on batch sparging, as that is effectively what you’re...

O2 Suck Back- Balloon Method Question

Saturation is a function of temperatre and pressure. The lower the temperature, the more CO2 can be dissolved. The higher the pressure, the more CO2 can be dissolved. Search for a carbonation chart to see the ranges. I couldn’t tell you how much pressure your ballon will generate when filled x%...

    Pre-boil Gravity Weighing Me Down

Yes. Yup. It makes sense that on a small sample like 100ml, a few seconds of steam coming off the surface would have a measurable impact on the gravity.

    Pre-boil Gravity Weighing Me Down

That seems like the easy button right now. One less thing to do on brew day. It’s just the geek in me wondering why.

    Pre-boil Gravity Weighing Me Down

Total red flag. That’s the point of this thread. Something is not right with my pre-boil measurements. My post boil measurement are right on. Pre-boil volume readings are taken at 195*F. I turn on the burner as soon as the first gallon hits the kettle, and stays lit throughout the sparge...

    Pre-boil Gravity Weighing Me Down

That’s a hell of a thought there. I collect the sample by dipping a 1 cup Pyrex measuring cup in the top of the wort. I then walk over to the chest freezer where I pull out a 1 quart Pyrex measuring cup and pour the 100ml sample in. That usually brings it down to 90*F, so I stick it back in...

    Pre-boil Gravity Weighing Me Down

My pre-boil gravity readings are always too high. Every single batch of beer I’ve brewed, BIAB, 2 vessel no sparge, batch sparge or fly sparge. My OG (post boil gravity) always lines up with my projected outcome. But if I calculate across the boil-off either way, the numbers do not line up...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

https://ssbrewtech.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/202260693/Infussion_MT_WP_V1.0.pdf That Riptide is capable of close to 7 gallons per minute at a couple feet of head. Midway would be 3-4. That’s 6-8 times my flow rate. Coupled with the hose that’s washing your grain bed around, I...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

@Pintabone I am using the same mash tun! I am using the SsBrewtech recirculation manifold up top. When I used just a hose, it basically bore a hole in the grain bed. When your grain bed runs dry, is it level? What’s your flow rate? What’s your crush? Looks like you’ve covered most your bases...

    RIMS mash efficiency issues

1st thought is to confirm that you are, in fact, losing efficiency. Just because your OG is 0.012 low, doesn't mean you've lost efficiency. If you have more wort volume, due to less boil off, your efficiency might not have changed at all. Compare gravity and volumes before and after the...

    Mill Cleaning

I just use a bench brush to get the heavy dust off. I use the brush right before milling having any stuff fall on the gound outside. I use the brush again right after milling having any stuff fall in the mash tun. After all, there’s rodent/bug stuff in the grain.

    Help identify the issue

My thoughts... CO2 coming out of solution because of temp rise or the dry hop providing nucleation sites. Also, yeast might be metabolizing hop compounds and producing CO2 while not affecting gravity.
