    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

That is great news! I was presuming it was necessary, but that will make life easier. I hope to share my own build once I'm done. Couldn't have happened without the great ideas in this thread!

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

Thank you for your feedback, jcorn. I'm planning on installing a butterfly valve on a 1.5" MIP to triclover fitting, like this one: http://www.brewershardware.com/1-1.5-Tri-Clover-X-1.5-Male-NPT.html Still, that triclover fitting is installed via threads. For folks that use the...

Subscribing so I can participate in the next group buy! Thanks for the hard work, stonebrewer

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

Do people remove the 1.5" threaded fitting from the bottom when cleaning and/or sanitizing, or are they infectionless with a decent cleaning regimen and leaving the fitting in-place?

    US-05 (dry) vs WY1056 (liquid) - My tests/results

I appreciate this kind of data! Yeast seem like a tough beast to tame, even comparing the same supplier's strain at two temperatures can be fascinating! Would the gelatin treatment affect the comparison? Chico isn't very flocculant, but the gelatin could have played a role in the diminished...

    Reverse Osmosis systems are expensive

My water is from DC. Falls Church City basically takes Army Corps' water, and throws a huge `tax' on it despite the fact that I live in a separate municipal county (I bring that up because it bugs me, Virginia's municipality system is broken). Anyhow, that Army Corps water runs through some...

    Reverse Osmosis systems are expensive

I bought the 5 stage system for $150 from AirWaterIce. Uses Filmtec membrane, came with TDS meter, shutoff valve, and DI bypass. In fact, I just removed the DI cartridge. I bought a pack of sediment and 5 micron filters at $3/ea from Amazon. I rotate the sediment filter every 3 months, the...

    Overpitching vs hops

Three notes on that recipe: 1) You have about 0.25 oz of bittering hops. Fuggle are low alpha acid, 5%ish tops. That might give you 5 IBUs (Tinseth) at that gravity. Your Chinook addition probably added more IBUs. You didn't get much hops flavor because that isn't very hoppy. 2) WLP002 is...

    WLP002 fast fermenter?

What temperature are you fermenting at? I have WY1968 -- roughly the same strain -- fermenting at about 65 deg F since Sunday night, but it's still quite vigorous now (visible motion, thick krausen). It was also a 1.080 OG beer, and I had a 1.5 L starter. This is by far the most flocculant...

Yeastcalc.com (Now two stir plate options?)

If Jamil pursued legal action against you for curve fitting on a sample of points, or looking at simple scripted source code, then he would definitely suffer from the "Streisand effect" among the homebrew community. I respect his opinion on many aspects of homebrewing, but I'm thinking a...

What Quick Releases do you use?

I second the camlocks from Bargain Fittings. I use 5/8" barbs with 1/2" silicone tubing on my camlocks with great success. I might change the tubing if it ever seems weak, but the quick disconnects keep demonstrating their usefulness when I decide to add something like a hopback to the stream...

    Boil kettle drain techniques

The bazooka clogged for me, regardless of chilling, whirlpooling, pumping, etc. Break material clogged the screen. I can't take credit for this picture, but I found it on Google Images. Good example of side dip tube after a vigorous whirlpool: http://i7.tinypic.com/3462cls.jpg You can see...

CFC and Plate Chiller users - do you rack off the cold break?

I whirlpool with a pump, and chill with a plate chiller. I get some cold break in the carboy, but it has never impacted my beer that I can tell. If anything, having near-instantaneous chilling following hops steeping in a hot whirlpool has positively improved my beers ignoring break material...

    Anyone Just "No Sparge"

I would disagree, parti-gyle can have a great first run-off (barleywine?) with a grainy second running acting as a separate batch... or starter wort as mentioned before. Some English breweries still operate this way.

Yeastcalc.com (Now two stir plate options?)

I wouldn't go that far, but if I understand correctly, live yeast will definitely cannibalize on dead yeast pitched in your starter. I think all steps on a starter are contingent on reasonable initial pitching rates.

Yeastcalc.com (Now two stir plate options?)

Jamil's formula has warnings of being proprietary. His warning on "Mr. Malty" about reverse engineering is anti-scientific. With all due respect, the results reek of a strange curve fit, especially the kludge for a stir plate scaling a curve-fit. Kai's makes the most sense to me. I use that...

    Bread yeast as nutrient??

I use Wyeast nutrient when I pressure can my starter wort, and I can assure you from smell alone that their nutrient has a lot of dead yeast. There's more to it, of course, but I don't use it on anything below 1.080. As far as blowoff, it's yeast dependent. I've had happy yeasts with a tiny...

    IBUs and Gruit

Background: I'm growing some gruit-related herbs in pots (separate from my garden beds this summer given some herbs' near invasive nature). I'm planning on brewing gruits this year with these herbs: Yarrow, Horehound, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile. I've read figures that IBUs around 10 or more...

    What are these things? Bacteria?

Sometimes I enjoy being humbled by seeing fellow homebrewers' microscopic pictures of their brews.

What gap are you crushing your wheat malt?

I use a cheap Corona mill to grind wheat malt and adjuncts separately from malts with husks. You could just change the spacing too. I've also read a longer mash with malted wheat is a good thing, you could try that if changing spacing is a PITA for you.
