What do you do while your beer is brewing?

I'm drinking a beer! Best hobby ever. Drink beer while doing it...and...have new beer when you're done!

Has brewing affected your opinion of commercial beers?

I love my new hobby...but I was a little bummed out a couple weeks ago. Didn't have a batch ready for drinking...so we ran out and picked up a few cases of my old fav...figured if nothing else...we get beer + bottles to use. Anyhow...after the first drink...the wife and I both agreed we...

    Fermentation temperature

I swamp cool as well. I keep the water temp around 60F for the first week (mostly hefeweizens so far) by dropping 4 bottles in the morning...4 again at night. After the first week...I just drop once a day and the water still holds below 70F. Done that method the last 7 batches and have gotten my...

    Wyeast activated during shipment??

Ok...that's good to know. Unlike yours...my packs were pretty warm. This is my first time ordering/using liquid yeast. So...I'm a little nervous things have started out badly.

    Wyeast activated during shipment??

Same thing happened to me today. I don't have the available fermenters until this weekend when I bottle whats going now. I put the packs in the fridge like the instructions stated. Am I alright to wait 3-4 days before Im able to use it?

    beers are reddish-brown

Same here. I've only done hefeweizen so far...and they've all been darker than I was expecting. Kinda between a hefe and a dunkel. I've just recently started experimenting with adding my extract later. Don't have any through the entire process yet to know if its working.

    Bottles

I kinda pre-planned my gettin in to home brewing...and started saving my Franziskaner pint bottles. Thinking back on all the bottles I threw out in the past...:smack:

    New to brewing...and loving it!

I'm a big fan of the Bavarian style wheats. With the exception of the 1 dunkel, I've been sticking with the hefeweizen...trying to get a stockpile built up. Which has been hard...the 1st batch went in a weekend :D I started with 1...now we're on 2...fermenters. My plan is to use 1 to keep the...

Beginner with a Q concerning after taste

Yeah...I was checking the water temps pretty religiously the first few days and was pretty impressed with how well it was holding the temp I was shooting for. I figured 65F...allowing for 5 degrees or so internal...not putting me much over 70F. I've got a batch I was going to brew this...

Beginner with a Q concerning after taste

Yeah...I'm not totally sold based on the descriptions. I transfer using a siphon...being very careful not to splash. Bottles I filled to 1/2" or so. I've made sure to take very specific notes. To use when comparing outcomes. Maybe I just need more batches under my belt. Wish I'd of caught on...

Beginner with a Q concerning after taste

Thanks for all the replies! BSG: Fermentis WB-06 OG - 1.050 FG - 1.010 Brewer's Best: Danstar Munich Wheat Beer Yeast OG - 1.050 FG - 1.013 The closest thing I can come up with from the link geoffm33 posted is oxidation. But...the descriptions on how it occurs doesn't sound like anything I did.

Beginner with a Q concerning after taste

The under carbonation I was expecting. I was just sampling a bottle at those points to see what sort of flavor was developing. The "wine" taste...I don't drink a lot of wine...but I have at special occasions...and it's that dry...alcohol...type of a taste. I wish I could describe it better...

Beginner with a Q concerning after taste

Hello all. New to brewing...started a few months ago. Prefer hefeweizen style, so that is what I've started out with. My first batch was a BSG kit. I tried some right away, as expected it was undercarbonated, but I felt the flavor was great. Bottled. Tried one after about a week. I...

    5 gallons is too much!

I've got 10 gallons going right now :-D

    New to brewing...and loving it!

Have brewed up 3 batches of hefeweizen so far...and have a dunkel fermenting. Really wish I would of gotten in to this soon. Wife and I are having a blast. Guess I owe a big thanks to the local liquor stores...for constantly increasing the prices on Franziskaner. Was complaining to a guy I...

    Cracked open my first bottle...

LOL...I only made it 3 days. Mine was undercarbonated...as expected...but maaaan was it smooth. I actually liked it better at day 3 than I did at the 2 week point. But...it was still the best beer I'd ever had...cause I made it myself! :mug:
