    Great inaugural brew day!

I concur! Congrats on your truly inaugural AG! hehe. I wish I could have done the same. I'm brewing this weekend though, so maybe I'll just call it "close enough." hmmm...strange...I'm brewing a bitter...perhaps subconsciously to commemorate my feelings about the last 8 years...

    A Belgian Experiment

i definitely remember the cheesy C&H commercials from when I was a kid in the 80s. All of my friends' dads in Crockett worked either at "the factory" (C&H) or one of "the plants," meaning of the 5 major oil refineries within a 10 mile radius of our town. Toxic death trap -even more so back then...

    A Belgian Experiment

Nice reference surfbrewer (coming from a fellow brewer in SB, and thus the central coast). it stands for "California & Hawaii Sugar," based in my home town of Crockett, California (3500 people- tiny town in the SF bay, but a big sugar company). Definitely a west coast brand. Probably not a a...

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

At the end of the mash time, I didn't actually add 2qts of hot H20. It came from the Vorlauf, which I simply poured back on top of the grain bed. No, I didn't remember to measure the temp of the grain bed after adding sparge water. Theoretically, it should be close to 170, right? I'll try to...

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

sparge temps were 180 and 181. I tried to get the grain bed up to around 170. This is the hot break(stopping enzyme conversion), correct? I corrected the hydrometer reading. It was 1.040@85F= OG 1.043 The wort tasted great. It'll just have to be a sessions porter, I guess.

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

The situation: 2nd AG brew yesterday. Lower OG than expected. Same problem as 1st AG brew from last weekend (discussed in this thread). The question: Is my technique simply off or, as suggested with regards to the last brew, is the MoreBeer grind just too coarse? ...or both? Porter Grain...

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

Thanks for your link Denny. I think I'll try sparging a little quicker this weekend with my first AG porter and perhaps add a little more sparge H2O as well. Though, according to your example on your site (10pd grain, 7gal pre boil wort), I wasn't too far below my target volume. My MLT, btw...
