    Cheap Mash Tun Upgrade

Fly sparging, the more the merrier. The insert also allows me to squish all the good stuff out with a potato masher, without collapsing the lines. Hoppy

    Cheap Mash Tun Upgrade

No more squished mashtun hoses. SWMBO asked me what to do with the turkey frying attachement my fryer (which is my kettle) came with (Bayou Classic from Ace hardware). I was about to tell her to toss it, when I had an idea... Standard cooler mash tun- Fryer attachment thingy...

Can you brew beer in outer space?

If you were to brew in space, and you burned yourself with boiling wort and then screamed- would anybody hear it? Hoppy

    Is This A Crazy Idea?

Not Crazy at all. I've been placing my carboys under a non-ferrous tubular metal pyramid with the aligning edge pointed to true North with excellent results. I'm naming the next batch "Bock Like An Egyptian" Hoppy

Bottling Mystery - bottles breaking at the neck

I was just about to post this same problem, but I did a search first and found this thread. I've been using Red Hook bottles, washed in the dishwasher, and capped with a two arm "Red Baron" capper, and I just started having the same problem on my last batch. I haven't changed my technique...

    Priming with DME?

Alright then. I'm going with the dextrose. I'm bottling in about five minutes, I'll sort out "better" next time. :D Hoppy

    Priming with DME?

Cool, thanks. Any idea which would produce more carbonation/faster/better? Hoppy

    Old Hops

Ok, I went with old hops since they were all I had. They smelled ok so we'll see what happens... Thanks everybody! Hoppy

    Priming with DME?

Recipe I'm using from the Clone Beer book, calls for priming with 1.25 cups of Extra Light DME. Problem is, I've never tried this. I assume I'd want to dissolve it in boiling water first, but the book says zip, zero, nada on the subject. Beer is five gallons of Pilsner Urquel Clone btw...

    Old Hops

I think I already know the answer I'll get, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I have a buddy coming over to brew this morning. He's been sitting on some ingredients for about 2 years. The hops he has, (vacuum sealed) have not been refrigerated as far as I know. Worth a try to use them, or...

    Pilsner/Lager fermenting question

Thanks everyone. She's in the fridge now at 44. I'll let you know how it turns out. Hoppy

    Pilsner/Lager fermenting question

Working on a Pilsner Urquel clone. Recipe calls for pitching at 70-75 degrees, and fermenting at 42-52 degrees. How long should I wait before I put my carboy in the fermenting fridge? I've just statred to see some activity. Thanks. Hoppy

    Thermostat/Temp Controller Question

I'm trying to convert my beer fridge into a lagering cooler, but I've run into a problem. I bought a Johnson Controls A19BAB-3 thermostat unit on e-bay. It's supposed to be adjustable between 30 and 130 degrees, and it probably is, but it only seems to work when the fridge is too cold, and...

    "Re-Heating" Wort

Thanks, good read. I'm scrapping my original plan and building a proper Lautering tun instead. Hoppy

    "Re-Heating" Wort

The plan was to mash in the kettle, sparge into the carboy, and then return the wort to the kettle for the boil- twice. But now this plan is sounding stupid. A trip to the hardware store may be in order. Maybe I'm reading this recipe wrong. It says to mash in at 150 for 60 minutes, then...

    "Re-Heating" Wort

Ok, here's the dilemma. I decided to brew up an all grain Kolsch. The recipe calls for a total of 11 pounds of grain and malt. So far so good. But when I got the bag of grain/malt mix home from the brew store, it occurred to me that there is no way I'm going to get all that stuff into my 5...

When in doubt, don't spit into the beer.

Throw it out? Are you crazy? No, once I realized that I had just spit a couple of million germs into the bucket, my first thought was, "Maybe it'll be ok". My second thought was,"Don't be an idiot", so I stopped the siphon, resanitized the bucket and lips, and made up a new batch of sugar...

When in doubt, don't spit into the beer.

You have a point there. If I were a true sanitation freak, I would have had my sister suck on the siphon hose, (she's rather homely, and rarely kisses boys). I do have a vacuum pump that I use to change the brake fluid on my bikes, but I'm afraid that a contamination of DOT 5 may cause my...

When in doubt, don't spit into the beer.

Ok, I know this sounds like obvious advice, but I learned something tonight. Don't spit into your beer. I'm a sanitation freak. I must use 50 gallons of water, and a half gallon of bleach, along with a healthy dose of no-rinse stuff, before I'm ready to bottle. Tonight was no exception...
