    Hydrometer or refractometer

Hydrometer never fails! Refractometer before fermentation, hydrometer after it starts and alcohol is in solution.

    Elder betty clone?

Big secondary on Elderberries I am guessing. Idk, the beer really didnt shine for me when I tasted it. It was really mellow and the elderberry character was nowhere near as pronounced as I'd hoped. Maybe your clone will be an amped up version! Goodluck

    First AG Batch!

AG is the way to go! Congrats on the switch-over, and hope the Irish Red turns out well.

Insane OG. I guess this is sort of what I asked for.

For such a big OG I would have made a nice size (2 liter) starter & definitely let this one sit for a month or two in secondary. Raising the temp to 74 ish degrees after primary fermentation clears up should help things a bit. I was going to say I hope you dont ferment it too hot or be ready for...

    Riddle Me This: Parti-gyle Calculation

Brewer X is brewing an English Barleywine (5 gallons - 90 minute boil) using: 18# Maris Otter Malt 4# Mild Ale Malt 2# Caramalt at a initial infusion ratio of 1 qt/lb at sacch rest of 150 F. Single step 60 minute mash with batch sparge. Brewer X is planning to parti-gyle this bitch and...

Change In Flavor The Second Time I Brewed The Same Recipe...

What were the gravities of each batch? I'm guessing it's the yeast starter maybe over attenuated?

    Homebrew Club Activity

I'm not sure how many of you all are involved in homebrew clubs, but I had a pretty descent idea a bit ago of a homebrew club meeting activity to promote knowledge. Although this is mostly for beginning/intermediate homebrewers, I still think everyone can benefit. Cupping malt. If any of you...

English IPA Recipe...how does it look

I would recommend using a more attenuative yeast strain than English Ale. I tried for an English IPA using WLP002 that dropped my 1.056 OG to 1.014 and left way too many esters in the beer. The hops I used were not enough either, estimated at 48.25 IBU. My advice based on my last batch: mash...

    Parti-Gyle Gravities

1.041 from original grain bill on 2nd runnings - was planning to no sparge 1st runnings, and just remash at 154 for 60 mins with new 7# of grain. New 7# of grain to contribute 34 pts. Am I off? How would you estimate 2nd runnings gravity with addition of new malts?

    Parti-Gyle Gravities

I am getting into the method & planning to do a English Barleywine & English IPA parti-gyle method the first week of July. I am writing out my recipes and playing with gravities. Just making sure my logic (and calculations) are on par. I average a 65% efficiency with batch sparging. English...

    Coffee additions?

I recently did a English Coffee Porter & did 2 oz. of French Roast grinds in a doubled up muslin bag. Worked pretty well and was able to get a good amount of coffee in the end product. Was nice and smooth. I would say, as in making coffee, the darker the roast the less amount of coffee needed -...

    Homebrew pages

Liked as well! Keep at it, I'm diggin the logo man very nice work! Mine isn't on Facebook, but it's vilageidoitbrewing.com & is a beginning blog where I post up recipes & beer tastings. I'm starting to narrow in on English/Scottish/Irish style beers, so that might be up your alley! Cheers man

    Keg Hopping Trick

I came up with a solution recently of a way to keg hop for a select timeframe without having to go "fishing" for the mesh bag at the bottom of the keg. Im not sure if it will work but will be trying it tomorrow, is getting a few packs of fishing bobbers, sanitizing them, and throwing them in...

Mason / Picante / Salsa JARS for BOTTLING....

The only pressure I have used a mason jar for is freshly roasted coffee beans that emit, most likely, a fraction of the CO2 that carbonating beer would. The only way to really know is trial & error. Just take precaution & probably only do one mason jar of beer to start with and put it in a box...

    Sediment in the Bottle

I've been homebrewing for around a year now & have always kegged my beer from the get go. Just bottled a wheat beer about two weeks ago that all the bombers have a 1/2" sediment layer on the bottom. I, for some reason, did not rack the beer to a bottling bucket before bottling - I just went...

    Advice - Simple Electric Brewing

Thanks for all the replies! I think I have found what I am looking for. At first, I would like to set up a plug-n-play control system such as the electric kettle controller found on HighGravityBrew.com. I plan on getting two 15 gallon Blichmann kettles with conversion for heating element and...

    Advice - Simple Electric Brewing

Thanks for the replies! I am not a building saavy kind of guy, so alot of the builds on here I dont think I would be able to replicate in the least bit. Could one use a cooking controller (http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=44) as a controller for a...
