    Poolside Brewpub

Just went through your build, fricking awesome job and I'm jealous as I have to lug my stuff out of the basement to brew on the pool deck but I do have a floating beer pong table for my pool but I digress. We have neighbors behind us that have a raised patio and seem to look down in our pool...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Going to score some of that Honeycrisp cider at Whole Foods to make my second batch. I'll use 1 1/2 pounds of organic turbinado sugar and a pound of organic honey, a packet of Nottingham and wait longer for the bottling this time. First batch hit .990 in about 10 days before bottling, I let it...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I took another measurement of the plain juice and got a 1.045 on the refractometer and 1.048 on the hydrometer, so you're right I'm about to get some strong cider Thanks for your input but I'm going to have to figure out the Brix tool for fermented readings

    Man, I love Apfelwein

OK I believe you're correct as I took a reading last night of a different product and the (cheap) refractometer measured 1.032 and the hydrometer read 1.011. Now I'm not sure what I'll have but I'm betting it'll be stronger than expected

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I expected a higher OG as well but a 6-7% end product will be fine The juice by itself had a 1.040 using an inexpensive refractometer The yeasties are going crazy, no krausen layer just a constant supply of tiny bubbles, room smells wonderful so I'm quite encouraged. My daughter is the cider...

    What to do

Going for my first cider to celebrate my daughters graduation 5 Gallons of Cider 2 pounds cane sugar Yeasties Any boil? A dry 7% sounds perfect How long in the carboy and I'm assuming after bottling with a 5 oz primer I would have to pasteurize to give it a final stop

    Cold crash question

Actually tried to get them out and couldn't as I only used three small bags with 5oz of hops. Seconday is now sitting in a large bucket of ice and plan on bottling tomorrow night I'll let you'll know how it turns out as it still smells awesome

    Cold crash question

Hello all, I just dry hopped my Pliny clone with weighted down hop bags that still floated, duh!, not enough weight so my question is Should I remove the hop bags before cold crashing or just leave them in? Out of the boil kettle there was a ton of trub and a nice looking yeast cake after the...

Followed hop schedule and added Wirlfloc and remaining 7lbs LME at 10 min. Then I used imersion chiller...

Late addition extract question. Lead to a 30 min discussion that was cut way short.

Thanks all, between the unionDR and Yooper I've going this route. Five gallons in the kettle to start warming while I steep 1 1/2lbs of grains in 1 1/2 gallons on the stove, strain this into the kettle with a little rinse of the kettle water. I'll add the full pound of DME and a couple of lbs...

Late addition extract question. Lead to a 30 min discussion that was cut way short.

Only have 1lb of dry and 9lbs of LME, I also have 1 1/2lbs of specialty grains that I'll steep in maybe a gallon of water as described and add it to the kettle. I plan on a full boil of about 6.5 gallons to start with including the steeped grain (is that a mini mash?) and save all the LME till...

Late addition extract question. Lead to a 30 min discussion that was cut way short.

So after steeping your specialty grains, you boil just that a little (half?) DME with the hop schedule and add all the rest of the DME and all the LME at flameout? Do you let the wort sit for 5-10 minutes before chilling or stir in and go. BTW, big R. Crumb fan here

propane ran out mid boil, best thing that ever happened!!!

I like to use the garage, door closed when cold out but then the cigar smell gets in the house which the bride doesn't like. When it's nice out then the neighbors know what's going on :mug: As BlackDogBrew states above, you have to have a blue flame. I have to adjust both the regulator and...
