How much washed yeast to use in a starter?

Seems to me that being strong and active is certainly a prerequisite to being able to work successfully. Their ability to work successfully drives pitch rate, right. Anyhow, I am impressed with the fact that yeast can sit in the fridge for such long periods of time and then fairly easily be...

How much washed yeast to use in a starter?

@keninMN Hey that's great! Just reinforces how hardy those little buggers can be. I decanted and pitched my final 3L starter of 4-month old WLP-830 yesterday morning and it's happily bubbling away this morning at 51F. Time will tell how it works out but so far so good. Cheers!

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Depends where you live. I did get a 50 lb. sack of Canadian 2-Row from them around the holidays, delivered for $37 which was hard to beat. I think that was during some holiday shipping special though. I'm 1,186 miles SSW of them, down I-35.

Very nice @icebob! I just degassed some bulk dough and made four 390g dough balls for Saturday pizza fest. Pics to follow.

How much washed yeast to use in a starter?

Combined all the starter into the gallon jug today. Certainly a much thicker white layer over the trub than 24 hours before! I also tasted it... Tasted like yeast. A little bitter. Gonna crash it in the morning and hopefully pitch tomorrow evening after brewing.

The above is from the starter flask. I planned to make another 2L starter from this.

How much washed yeast to use in a starter?

Great input. I may do that. So are you telling me that the only viable used in the picture below is the super thin white layer on the top!?

Got one of their catalogs in the mail today... flipped through it to see the same old gimmicks and giggled as I tossed it in the recycle bin.

Starter from 8 month old washed yeast.

It smelled better today. I crashed it last night and decanted off the spent starter. The remaining yeast looks nice. Going to make a final starter from it for my beer this Friday.
