    Yeast alternatives

Please post something or send a PM on how the beer comes out with baker's yeast. I'm dying of curiosity to try this.

    Bottles in Toronto

Of course, the normal approach is to buy them full of beer and then dispose of the contents.

    Rubber Gasket Fell in Wort

Almost everyone's done it. I scrubbed the crap out of my arm with sanitizer, reached in and grabbed it. It was my first or second batch and it came out fine. Probably the majority of brewers who use the big plastic fermenters have done this at least once. It's one reason that I tell new...

someone actually put bacon in their secondary....

A couple of weeks ago, I MISSED (damn it) the tasting at my LHBS (Brew Your Own Beer in Havertown) where a guy brought Bacon Rausch Beer. I wonder if this is the same guy - but it doesn't quite sound like it. John from BYOB told me about it - the guy froze his wort and removed the fat that...

    Concerned about Muntons

It's completely normal to have a lot of airlock activity for only a very short time. Relax.

Why not make a starter with dry yeast?

Beats me. I take an empirical approach to questions like this. I always go for the simplest method (reducing my opportunities to screw up). If the simplest method works, I don't try to do anything more. Simply pitching dry yeast, without making a starter or rehydrating, has always worked...

would this work for adding fruit?

I've made some fruit beers and always used a second stage for the fruit, but it seems like it should be OK. Not speaking from experience though.

    Sample beers -- all nasty

My question is what kind of improper handling would cause this? My guess - most likely heat - beer is notoriously temperature sensitive and doesn't travel well. If you have options for your distributor, I would use another one. If they were careless with handling once, they will be again...

    Raspberry Ale

Glad to hear it turned out well. I noticed that you used rice flakes instead of rice solids. Any comments or thoughts on that? I think another guy went that way (see above) with unsatisfactory results).

My LHBS isn't selling any. He expects it back in stock eventually but he said that everything was recalled.

They already jacked them up. They went from maybe two bucks BN (Before Notty) at my LHBS to about $4.50.

    Did I ruin my beer?

I would say, next time, follow the package directions, but don't worry about it for now. I'm sure it's going to be fine. I've used 05 many times and sprinkling right onto the wort has never failed.

    Commercial Beer Recomendations

@ eljefe - look around for a Wegman's or Whole Foods - both of them have broken the code on beer sales in grocery stores in PA (have a food court and a place to sit). There are a couple of them in my area and it's great. And back on topic - I always recommend that you buy local, whatever that...

    Siphoning into bottling bucket... question

Oldest U.S. Beer Maker, Yuengling, Eyes Expansion

Best story is from a brewery tour - and that's definitely worth doing if you are up that way. Dick Yeungling wanted to be able to spend time in Florida, especially in the winter, which (they asserted during the tour) is why he bought the brewery in Tampa. It's an old Stroh's or Heilmann...

Who is the oldest "old F*rt" on HBT?

Beats me - 57 here. First batch was only about eight or ten years ago.

    Best & Worst Brewpubs

In Philly, it's hard to pick out a "best" - I put all of them as tied for first. Two "worsts" - Gordon Biersch in the Tysons Corner Mall down near DC. Who needs someone to attempt the faithful re-creation of German beers? And second is some joint in Newport Beach - I went their years ago and...

best beer you ever had from a can

I've had a nice number of Sly Fox beers and they are excellent as a rule, but I have to admit that for no rational reason, I start with a low expectations on what I'm going to get from a can. And if I'm buying a mixed six, a couple of cans don't "look right." One huge advantage: they are a...

Had to throw out a lot this year.

That might be the answer - when I'm full up next year , I'll cut them down and bag them in a trash bag or three and just give 'em away to whoever claims them.
