pH Meter Calibration Solution: How long is it good for?

AJ: I was just listening to your water workshop MP3 for my second time. I heard you mention the importance of using fresh buffers so I decided to order new bottles. I discovered that the ones I brought one year ago were already past their prime and it has been affecting my pH calibration /...

Frigidaire Model FRC445GB Mini-Fridge Kegerator Conversion

+1 on elganso's comments. I have done a few of these conversions. On the second one I did with a friend, we didn't pay attention and cut too much off of th plastic. Then we put the whiteboard on the door and had fit issues getting the door to seal correctly. On the third conversion...

    white labs noob yeast questions

Use Mr Malty.com to get tour starter size right. I would advise using a stir plate. I make mine the night before I brew so that I am pitching the starter active.

    Blow off or three way?

I always use a 1" blow-off tube on my batches. With my yeast starter I am usually loaded up with 5.25G in a 6G carboy and the blow off tube saves a lot of hassle. I swap it out after about 5-6 days for a 3-piece so that I can clean up the gunk from the tubing etc...

How to aerate an AG batch in Carboy

I have sloshed the wort from bucket to bucket and then transferred to the carboy with pretty decent results. I recently switched to using a mix-stir and love it!!

First AG batch. I clearly was not ready!!

Don't sweat it. I think that all brewers have had those days and especially on first brew days. The key is too first have fun with it. Next, analyze your process, take good notes, and plan for the next brew. After a few brews under your belt you will start seeing more things happening right...

    Left-over Grain

Does anyone know what most commercial breweries do? I can only imagine the tons of spent grain that they generate.

barley crusher or ? what mill should i buy...

I love my BC and would highly recommend it!!! No matter what mill you buy, just remember that the drill creates a lot of torque and if you don't hold down the base the entire mill will quickly rotate tossing all of your uncrushed grains onto the floor/driveway or whatever... especially...

    Iodine and chalk

I learned this test from watching Kai's video as well. It's a great use of that children's sidewalk chalk that I had sitting around. I personally wait until conversion is complete based on the iodine reaction. This applies whether I am doing a single infusion mash or decoction.

Hefeweizen lovers - how do you step mash if using a cooler??

I started using decoctions last year when I want to do a step mash. I found that too many step infusions resulted in very thin mashes and moved my mash to sparge water ratio quite far away from the suggested 50-50. For hefes I typically use infusion for the acid rest and then move it to...

    Hop Spider plug...

After clogging up my auto-siphon a number of times during transfer on my IPAs, I decided to build one of these myself. Coincidentally the Nov BYO has a how-to guide for those who need it. Transfer and clean-up was a breeze. This definitely makes brew-day a lot more enjoyable. I used a...

    Efficiency numbers, I'm confused

This could just be wort stratification related. You have to really mix the pre-boil wort otherwise it may not be homogenous. This could lead to errors in your pre-boil readings.
