You need it hooked up for sure while it's carbing up. Then when it's dispensing if you don;t leave it hooked up it will slowly loose pressure and carbonation as you dispense.

I usually mull grain am mash in with my 3 year old helping in the late afternoon. But I wait to start the boil until they are in bed. I don't want them around a Keebler of boiling wort.

If they are blatantly mooching it's a different story.

I would be worried about oxygenating the beer through that.

A friend liked my6beer and wanted to pay for it in the past. I said let's brew a double batch together and then split it and the cost of ingredients. That avoids the whole "selling" issue and teaches them something.
