Source for cheap vials for yeast storage?

I second this reccomendation. I've been using "baby" soda bottles for a couple of years. I have a rack for them and they take up almost no room.

    DFH Score!

Yes, pretty sure he used SABCO. At least according to their website. As for moral authority, there is none. Everyone has to make their own decisions, but I try to avoid knowingly breaking the law as I go through life. If I want a used keg, there are ethical ways to get one. If they are...

How many weeks do you ferment, typically?

For ale, it's 4-3-2. 4 Weeks in primary. 3 weeks in a keg at basement temps. 2 weeks at 38f on gas. I don't like green beer. I find that almost without exception, normal gravity beers lose the green tang at about 8 weeks.

    Here goes nothing..

I have this going right now with the dregs from two bombers of Rogue Chocolate Stout. I started with .040 and about 250ml. It fermented out in about three days, and last night I ramped it all the way up to 750 and it's basically finished in 12 hours. I don't really have a brew planned this...

    Am I a Loser?

I don't care for Bud, or really that entire genre of lager, but the guys that brew it are undoubtedly very, very talented. They have my respect for generations of repeatability and consistency.

New brewers - stop worrying about gravity readings

The truth is really somewhere in the middle. 1) You do not need a hydrometer to make tasty homebrew. Patience and good sanitation is far more important. 2) It is an integral part of the hobby for folks who want to know the efficiency of their process, and for people who brew competitively...

    Where did I go wrong?

Sorry, I was in a hurry on that last post. If you have treated municipal water, there is a good chance that it is treated with either chlorine or chloramine. Chlorine can be boiled off. Chloramine requires treatment with potassium metasulphite (Campden Tablets). I avoid topping off with...

    Where did I go wrong?

The phenolic taste is what I'm getting at...high fusel alcohol could be the result of high fermentation temps. I'm had brews ruined by topping off with tap water that contained chloramine. You can't boil off chloramine.

    Where did I go wrong?

Given your procedures, this is what I would suspect.

    I hate pipleline

I know others will respond that their beer is ready to drink in 3-4 weeks, but I just plan on a minimum of 8 weeks from brew day for low to mid gravity brews. Between weeks 6 and 8, there is a huge change as the flavors meld and the green tang diminishes. Really, 9 weeks is just about peak...

What Beer Was Your Point of No Return?

These days I prefer several of the North American craft breweries over anything imported, but the first beer that really slapped me in the face and got my attention was Duvel. A cold Duvel in a tulip glass is so incredibly well done and just spot on. Perfect evervescent carbonation, spicy and...

Using the BMBF (BierMuncher Bottle Filler)

Yes, I use a spring loaded wand and no stopper. I carb my beer a little high, shove the spring loaded wand into the picnic tap, turn down the PSI to about 2 and bleed off excess, and fill the cold bottles to overflowing. I load the bottles into a galvanized tub and use a 7' liquid tube. I...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2011?

+5 gal Imperial Stout +5 gal Vanilla Porter 196.5

    I hate carboys.

I switched over to 7.9 gallon plastic pails for 5 gal batches a couple of years ago, and I love them. They don't break, are easy to clean and have enough headspace that I don't have to use blow off tubes. If I do a high gravity brew, I secondary in a better bottle, otherwise I don't secondary...

WORST Home Brew Store experience ever!

I've never had an experience like that at a LHBS. I have two within reasonable distance. At one, the owners are incredibly friendly, helpful and encouraging. I don't get there often because they have very limited inventory, and because the are 75 miles away. The other is a larger store with...

    Wow--what a difference aeration makes!

I used a stone and regulator with O2 from Northern Brewer for all my brews in 2009. It worked great, but my setup had gotten too complicated. It wasn't as enjoyable. For 2010, I went back to pouring the cooled wort between two sanitized pails four or five times. Less cleaning and sanitizing...

    where do you order from?

Best website in the business (imo), fast shipping, good selection, good recipe kits, a little pricey. For equipment purchase, I'll check them, Midwest, and sometimes Austin Homebrew. Don't sleep on Midwest Supplies...I've found their prices to be slightly better on some things, especially...

    SN Glissade

Those guys are so good. Everything they brew is terrific. I had a couple of Glissade and it's not my favorite, but very impressive.

Sound off: Commercial beer you're digging

Been drinking a lot of Big Sky Moose Drool as my session beer, but I make sure to have one Fuller's 1845 for my Friday night treat after another brutal week at work. I think 1845 might be the best beer on the planet.
