    All things Trappist

There is an excellent thread about homemade candi syrup here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/20-lb-of-sugar-and-a-jar-of-yeast-nutrient.114837/ It is not difficult to produce. You'll need a good thermometer ( I own a thermoworks ) , some DAP ( diammonium phosphate ) or some yeast...

    All things Trappist

Very interesting thread ( I'm Belgian :) ) . Rochefort 8 is my favorite beer it is well balanced. I brew dubbel and tripel at least once a year. Wyeast 1762 abbey II for the dark and Wyeast 3787 Trappist high gravity for tripel. I make my own candi syrup.

    Grainfather!!

After sending the pictures of my controller ( see on this page ) I received the following reply from Grainfather: " Mel (Grainfather) Jul 4, 11:08 BST Hey Jacques, The tech team have confirmed that this control box is not from the defected batch and is safe to use. During the heating...

    Grainfather!!

    hedgie57 , That's why why I'm puzzled , they replaced the original NEMA 5-15 ( 125 V, 15 A ) receptacle with a NEMA 5-20 T slot ( 125 V, 20A ) , but the cable connecting the heating element to the controller has not changed , it is still the original one with a 10 A capacity, not for 15A...

    Grainfather!!

treacheroustexan , I send my 2 pictures to GrainFather + the PO number of the controller, let's see what they 'll say. Now I'm confused, GF shipped you a controller with a new receptacle ( it looks like a NEMA 5-20 receptacle to me ) but they didn't ship the matching NEMA 5-20 plug. So, to me...

    Grainfather!!

treacheroustexan , thank you for posting the picture of the receptacle. I purchased my GF connect about 1 year ago and here is a picture of the receptacle. It is different ,does it means that I have an old version of the controller ?

    Grainfather!!

I contacted Grainfather to inform them that 2 members of this forum had serious safety problems caused by the melted heating element receptacle on the controller unit. I made very clear that now I'm scared to use my GF.I'll keep you informed about the reply.

    Opinions on Extract Brewing

I started homebrewing around ... 1989. Most of us were starting with a "Beer Kit" :1 can of hopped Muntona LME with the dry yeast taped inside the lid :) and 1 kg of cane sugar. Malt extract quality has improved tremendously and once in a while I'm not ashamed to brew a batch using...

Excellent thread ( I'm Belgian :) ) Is the wyeast 3787 Trappist high gravity a good candidate for that recipe ?

    Grainfather!!

shortyz, I found your reply on page 101 of this thread. Thank you for the pictures. Are the plug and receptacle of the heating element under rated ? Are the crimped connectors the culprits ? ( you suggested to solder them ) . Are the 110V units UL certified ?.

    Grainfather!!

Right now I'm at 8000 kilometers of my grainfather , but I guess that during the pre-mash step the heating element is working at 100% of its maximum power. While during the mashing step(s) it is powered just enough to maintain the mash temperature constant.

    Grainfather!!

singybrue , did it happen during the mashing step or the boiling step ?

    Grainfather!!

As a new grainfather 110 volts unit owner ( 4 brews so far ) and a retired electronic technician I worry about the electrical problems of the controller unit. Is the manufacturer aware of that ? Before turning my grainfather on I double check that the 3 plugs are firmly inserted in the...

    Grainfather!!

Welcome to the club .You'll like your grainfather. 1) There is a 2.5-3" wide strip of what appears to be yellow sheet fiberglass curled around the inside of the kettle just above the pump inlet. This is packing material so remove it . 2) Be sure that all the 3 plugs are properly inserted in...

Can you explain why using rice hulls cause problems ?

    Grainfather!!

To me it looks like stirring the mash goes against the basic idea of the grainfather ? : start the pump and forget about it
