Sanitizing your bottles...

I have all my bottles clean, dry and ready to go (usually Oxyclean and a bottle brush, plus a soak in clean, cool water followed by a short pressure rinse afterwards), then use the poor man's vinator (industrial spray bottle) to spray 3 or 4 pumps of Star San into each one, roll them around to...

First time making a starter - volume question

Sounds like 100g DME to 1L of water is the way to go. Thanks, y'all!

First time making a starter - volume question

I'll be making my first starter this week using my just-completed homemade stir plate and a 1000 mL Erlenmeyer flask, and I have a question regarding what volume to shoot for. Be gentle, now! ;) The recommended water/DME ratio I've found is 2 cups water to 1 cup DME (from the BeerGeekNation...

    Hello from Manor, TX

Hey neighbor! (in my best Frank Booth tone...) North Austin over here. You know what the WORST thing is for me about this hobby? Living about 10 blocks from AHBS. I'm gonna go broke!

    stri plate concept...

Just finished my stir plate tonight. I need to adjust the distance from the internal magnet to the top of the box as it seems to run alot smoother when there's a little less than a quarter inch between the flask and the box (hence the towel draped over the box in the video below adding a bit of...

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

Just returned from the LHBS with everything for this recipe. After talking to the guy there, we decided to go balls out and not swap anything for the Special B, but to just add it to the other four grains. Gonna be packed fulla peanuts, I'm sayin'. He wasn't exactly sure what the debittered...

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

So, should I swap both the 1.0 lb Chocolate Rye Malt and 0.15 lb Chocolate Wheat Malt for the same volume of Special B? Or should I keep some of one or the other in addition to Special B? Also... I don't really know what the reference to 0.3 lb Debittered Belgian Chocolate is... Is this a...

    I suck at bottling

That's EXACTLY the method I use—a modification of Revvy's bottling rig. Works like a charm! But I still hate bottling.

It'll be fine... And when it is, here's a label for ya. We got slow at work today, so I had to fill a few minutes with something!

AHS Saint Arnold Weedwacker Clone on deck

Just found this in reference to bottles breaking while capping: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/bottle-breaks-opening-336012/ Sounds like New Belgium bottles might be a somewhat bad choice... I'll hafta remember that. :D

AHS Saint Arnold Weedwacker Clone on deck

I think the cap got a slight bit crooked as I was putting the pressure on, so I basically crushed it. Then I drank the green beer straight outta the broken bottle as penance and laughed aloud as blood oozed from my gaping maw. Not really... But it was odd that it happened right after I was...

First recipe from scratch - Black IIPA

Would this be like BridgePort's Dark Rain? I'm not a huge IPA fan, but that's pretty good stuff.

AHS Saint Arnold Weedwacker Clone on deck

All bottled... Tasted a sample toward the end of the line, seems to be right on track. We'll refrigerate a few in about three weeks and see how it turns out. Meanwhile, here's some photos of today's activities... Oh, and had my first broken bottle while capping, too <<crunch>>.

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

Shifting gears a bit, but on the same idea... How about swapping something out of this recipe for the Special B? Or adding Special B? And maybe dropping or removing much of the chocolate addition? This seems like a pretty straightforward recipe that could be tweaked a bit. Thoughts? (I removed...

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

I think at this point it's not so much being committed to real fruit as it is being inexperienced in the use of different grains to achieve the same or similar effect. But the suggestion is certainly valid and got me reading up on AHS website about the ingredients of their Imperial Stout recipe...

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

No, I know exactly what he was referring to—it just made me think of using those ingredients specifically as additives. I wonder if the sugar content of the dates and figs would contribute much in terms of fermenting. Would this require an addition during the boil, or afterwards during...

Feedback on an idea: "Christmas Fruitcake Stout"

I was reading a review of a commercial Imperial Stout, and the author made several references to notes of raisins, dates, prunes and dried figs... This got me to thinking about doing a "Christmas Fruitcake Stout" using those exact additions. My thought is that the dates and figs would possibly...
