    Help Nottingham not taking off?!

I never check the expiration date before buying yeast, but I think I will be more diligent in doing so. Although you already pitched the yeast, maybe your LHBS will be willing to give you fresh packet as compensation? You could argue that it caused you increased stress in that fermentation did...

    BIAB Bag Sewing Machine

If you trust a $15 machine to hold 10+ pounds of grain, go for it. I would recommend double (or triple) stitching the bag. When you get to "mill-e-wah-que" get the bag sewed for you.

    Help Nottingham not taking off?!

Did you take a hydrometer reading with the Nottingham batch? If so, what is the result?

    BIAB Kettle Size

44 quarts is plenty big for a 5 gallon batch, full volume BIAB no sparge. I use the basket and pulley system, but it's not necessary. If you can find a pasta strainer or something similar and set it on top of a 5 gallon bucket, that would work as well. I tried looking for the post to describe...

    hole in my biab

Congrats! I also have had grains fall into the pot, which I boiled. Just like yours, tasted great.

Why do I keep getting these floating chunks of trub?

After 24 hours in the primary, mine looked like this. This was the first time I used Irish Moss, so I'm glad others have experienced this as well. Even though I've been brewing for 10 years, anytime something different happens I get concerned, only to remind myself I need to follow the...

    Hello! New in Madison, WI

Welcome! Lots of local choices for homebrew supplies. I get my propane tank filled at Mounds Pet Store off of Verona Road. Something like $20 for a 20 lb tank. I don't know if it's the best but they fill it while you wait.

    How fast do you brew

I did the same thing for a blonde ale and finished in 2.5 hours this weekend. It would be nice if it tastes good to cut down on some time for session beers. Keep us updated on how it turns out.

    How fast do you brew

This was a question I was pondering myself. I average about 4 hours for 5 gallons and 5 hours for 10 gallons.

My Ugly Junk- Corona Mill Station...

Agreed. I get the same efficiency if I double crush or single crush at a tighter setting using this mill for BIAB.

    12-12-12 Wee Heavy Recipe Formulation

I think I will plan on brewing one of these recipes on 12/12/11. My birthday is December 12th, so not a bad way to spend a birthday. Then I get to drink my creation on 12/12/12. I'll have more time to read over the post later and sift through some of the ideas, but I'm looking forward to it.

Max grain bill your pot pot will hold for BIAB.

On my last brew session (Bee Cave Brewery Pale Ale), I added about 2 gallons of top off water after a 60 minute mash (10.5 gallon batch in a 15 gallon pot) and got 75% efficiency.

3 Liter soda bottles with TAD?

I purchased a regulator and a paintball adapter (http://www.rebelbrewer.com/shoppingcart/products/The-Adapter-%252d-Paintball-Tank-Regulator-Coupling.html), along with a TAD adapter...

3 Liter soda bottles with TAD?

I've had some success with using 3 liter bottles with the Miller/Coors TAD. An initial problem I had was sealing the bottle during the initial carbonation (priming with corn sugar) with both the 3 liter caps and the polyseal caps (I put a balloon on top and it inflated, which suggested a leak)...

    Priming a Tap-A-Draft

I don't have the old style TAD taps, but I'm about 99% sure it does not work (at least the setup I have). I would send a PM to rick689 to see if he's been able to create an adapter with the older style taps, I know that he was thinking about it.

    BeerSmith Worth $$

I think it's worth the $22, I use it frequently to create and modify recipes. Once I nailed down my equipment profile, it's quite accurate at predicting water volume, strike temp, etc. However, if I were only using kits, I probably wouldn't use the software as much. I also like how I can keep...

    A few simple questions :]

Ignore the kit instructions and be patient. Once I started doing that and following what I read here and in the brewing books, my beer improved immensely. Good luck with your other kits.

    when do you brew?

I get up at 5am on either a Saturday or Sunday to brew. I have an 11 month old baby, and she will get up during mashing (typically), and will take a nap when it's time to start boiling the wort. Saying that, I've brewed in the evenings before without problems (before my daughter was born). I...
