ideal fermentation temp for Selection Original Merlot?

We have this WineExpert kit, as typical the directions seem a bit generic. I am wondering what your thoughts are regarding the ideal fermentation temperature. In case it makes any difference, our plans are to start it this week, bulk age in secondary for several months, bottle in the fall, and...

    Q: Window AC Compressor cycling

Normally the main concern for quickly cycling an AC is that the compressor motor can be over-strained if it turns on while the compressor is still holding a high pressure. Given a few minutes of the compressor being off and the pressure will normalize. I can't think of any mechanical reason...

    Success..Soldering fittings to keggle!

Love this idea! I wonder if it is much more challenging to do this on the rounded side of a kettle where the ball valve normally is located? What is the special solder made of, can it handle Star San and PBW?

    Simcoe Hops

Nice one, but no the actual hop cones are not covered by plant patents only the reproduction of plants is covered by a plant patent.

    Simcoe Hops

RIAA situation was an application of copyright law not patent law. The people they went after often had hundreds of songs and had also shared with others, which made it worthwhile to pay the attorneys to pursue damages. Plant patents do little more than enable the patent holder the right to sue...

    Simcoe Hops

So long as the patented variety wasn't being used for commercial uses, pretty sure that there would be no issue for a lucky "Joe" with Simcoe in his backyard. The patten owner wouldn't have suffered any monetary damages, so there shouldn't be anything to sue "Joe" for. The pattern owner might...

Anyone get air on the out flow side of their plate chiller?

I believe that hot aeration is more of an urban legend since hot wort/water doesn't physically have the ability to hold much air. I wouldn't worry a bit about that. The air is coming from somewhere, so recheck your fittings and inspect all your lines and chiller for puncture holes.

Thoughts on building a keggle from a short 1/4bbl keg?

Exactly what he said! My 8-gallon kettle works, but always have to be cautious to avoid boil over for every batch of brew. Wish I knew to buy a larger kettle.

Kegarator, Bar, Fermentation Chamber in progress photos

This foam is R-10 for the 2-inch stuff I have. Based on the thickness I doubt it is much different than a chest freezer. My chest freezer wasn't deep enough for a 1/2 barrel keg, which kind of lead me to build this enclosure with 24-depth. If insulative efficiency is a high priority then this...

Kegarator, Bar, Fermentation Chamber in progress photos

The 2-inch foam is stronger than you might think. It is not the crumbly kind that could shatter into a mess of styrofoam balls. The panels are fixed together with high-temp hot glue which forms a bond stronger than the foam itself. For instance while working on it I was able to walk over panels...

Kegarator, Bar, Fermentation Chamber in progress photos

I have one thermometer monitoring probe in a glass of water which has been holding in the mid to upper 30s depending on my tinkering. Despite the fluctuations in the air temperature the glass of water is holding quite steady and should be similar to beer temperature. As it is configured now...

Kegarator, Bar, Fermentation Chamber in progress photos

Got the cooling kegarator part of this DIY functionality complete. Thought I would share a couple photos. Controlled with a pair of $19 STC-1000's. The left side and shelf are a kegarator / cooler for beer malts and such. That's functional today and cooled with a window AC. It works great and...

Keg line lengths? There are diff opinions.

Do you already have your faucets? If not, then consider the Perlick 545 flow control. They have an adjustment lever that effectively adds resistance as a long line would. Might help cut out the compilation of precisely getting the best line length.

    home brew supply shops in......NJ!

I recently went to Cask and Kettle for the first time. Employees where all friendly. Almost nothing had a price tag, so annoyingly had to ask price for anything I was curious about. They had all the products and brands expected in a quality shop. They didn't seem to stock some bulk items...

    PBW and Oxyclean Single Use?

When it is not very dirty, I am wondering if it's feasible to save a PBW mixed solution for future cleaning. I have been figuring that when it bubbles, that is the "cleaning power" bubbling away, And it couldn't be reused in the future?

Fermentation Temperature Control. Ranco, Johnson Controls Unit

Don't forget about the STC-1000. It is a dual stage digital display for about $20. I is going to cost a few more dollars since all the wiring is DIY.

How do I adjust the flame on my burner?

I have this burner; and even with the plate wide open I've never been a to get a nice blue flame. It would barely stay lit before I disassembled it and filed open some of the holes that where restricted. Even now it will have no flame on about a quarter of the surface. All that said, it still...

    Are hops deer resistant?

We are infested with deer in this area and they destroy any plants which interest them. I am planning a hop garden and was wondering how well I need to protect it from deer?
