    post harvest plant care?

I just picked my hops individually and the leafs appear green and reasonably healthy. Do I need to cut back the vines or maybe let them keep trying to grow until 1st frost?

    black mold on keezer collar

My keezer is located in sunroom/porch where the taps often condensate due to humid conditions. The condensation has spread to my unfinished wooden collar causing the collar to mold. If I were to rebuild collar with a varnished board (polyurethane) should I be able to keep it mold free? Thanks

    post harvest plant care?

I have 1st year hops. I had a small harvest from my centennial and no cones on my nuggets. What should I be doing now to prepare hops for winter and beyond?

Help--Add undried Cascade Hops to Pale Ale?

You're on track with the 5:1 to 4:1 range with the ratio of wet weight to dry weight. I haven't verified myself, but read here that wet hops are undesirable for dry hopping due to grassy smell. I am guessing that the grassy smell is less stable and is first to go away when drying or boiling...

Attn Engineers: Plate Chiller Parallel or Perpendicular Flow?

Forgetting about arguments over possible efficiency set it up so that the coolant water input is at the wort output. This way the coolest coolant is the last to cool the coolest wort. Edit: saying the same as Bill

    Keazer Tip: PC Fan 12v

My keazer is in a sunroom without AC and I noticed that on warm days there had been up to a 12 degree differential in temperature from the top to bottom of my keazer. Here is a very easy DIY that has cut the temperature differential by more than half. Rather than the entire top layer being...

    Window Unit Cooled Bar idea

I could get ice to form in that tumbler on the far right/front corner of the shelf, but never froze the beer. My AC happened to be 8,000 btu, just because that what I had. I am sure a 5000 BTU would have similar effect. I learned the whole "beer machine" was grossly oversized for my modest beer...

    Window Unit Cooled Bar idea

With a little out of the box thinking, yes a window unit can take a small space right down to very near freezing. I had this 32 cubic foot keezer/ferm chamber thing running in the mid 30s. I had to fool the condenser freeze sensor and heat the ambient air sensor. Then use STC to measure the...

    Midwest Supplies

I have ordered bunches from them. My only complaint is that shipping small stuff cost way too much. I think it is due to them having FedEx as the only option. My orders here in NJ have always taken 4 - business days (counting Saturday).

Growing hops near well - invasive?

I don't know how a typical well would be an issue, but definitely want to keep them some distance from a septic drain field.

    Simcoe Hops

You might want to ask that anonymous attorney friend for the most obvious follow-up question: "How about an example where somebody was successfully prosecuted for patent infringement where the defendant had no commercial activity?" Never happened right? Kind gets down to "letter of the law"...

    "long lines" orthodoxy

I have them and they work great! I have lines about 4 to 6 feet and 15 psi. One of my favorite features is that it is so easy to adjust them on the fly. For example: before the first couple ounces of beer cool the faucet the beer will tend to be foamy, so you can start your pour with high...

    PAC MAN at 69?

Last summer I had no issues making a low gravity brew with Pacman while my basement was in the "high 60s". That is all I can offer you from my experience with Pacman.

ideal fermentation temp for Selection Original Merlot?

Thanks for the replies! Nice to know this yeast is so flexible. We ended up making this Friday night setting it to hold at 74-F. Returned from weekend travels on Sunday morning to find a vigorous healthy fermentation!

    5 Gallon Hop Trellis Designs

I love the idea, but I thought hops would need something much larger for the roots?

ideal fermentation temp for Selection Original Merlot?

Are you talking ambient air temp in low 70s, that could put the activity fermenting wine near 80 right? Internal temperature in upper 70s is what I would want to maintain for primary fermentation? What characteristics will be accentuated at low 70s v.s. high 70s, or maybe that degree of...
