Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi IslandLizard, Are you talking about this spigot on the Fermonstar (plastic carboy)? Are you saying this actually comes apart?

Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi all, All my equipment was bought new and is about 6 mounts old. I have a 7 gallon Fermonster for the fermentation vessel. I use a "Coolbrew" insulated enclosure to keep the fermentation vessel cool. I typically keep temps down around 65 degrees with two, 2 gallon jugs of frozen water...

Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi all, Thanks for all the input. Took another SG reading today and it's still at 1.018 and the off-taste was still present. I think at this point, the "taste" will be in my head regardless if it's actually present or not. I would not feel confident to serve it to my friends or family. So...

Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi all, Thank you for all the input. I used bottled spring water for the initial 6 gallons of the batch. Unfortunately, I did use a cup of tap water that was filtered through a Britta charcoal filter. I then microwaved that water to a boil. After it cooled to 95 degrees F, I used it to...

Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi KepowOb, I used CellerScience "English" yeast, the carboy is a plastic Fermonster unit with a spigot, and I use Starsan for my sanitizing.

Slight Medicine or Band-Aid Flavor In Week Long Fermentation

Hi all, Last weekend I did my first DME beer batch. I brewed an Irish Red Ale recipe kit from MoreBeer using CellarScience "English" yeast. This was a full boil (as I did in my first two batches) and the brew process seemed to go fine. As part of my cleaning and sanitation I added the...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Cracked open the first bottle yesterday. I have to say the recipe is pretty close to what I remember the beer being like. At an estimated 4.3 % ABV, its' a bit light on the alcohol compared to the original, but is very drinkable. I may try this again with a different yeast.

    Tips to Prevent DME Clumping?

Hi all, I brewed the beer with the DME this past Saturday. The DME powder was extremely fine. Based on the advice, I decided to place a 3lbs bag into single bowl and then pour it in the kettle after the steeping grains were in for 30 minutes. The temperature was around 160 degrees F...

    Tips to Prevent DME Clumping?

Here's a follow up question. My beer kit arrived today and I noticed that it came with 6 lbs of DME. The LME version comes with 7 lbs of malt extract. Now the brewing instructions that come with the kit, don't differentiate between DME and LME when it comes to the amount of water to start with...

    Tips to Prevent DME Clumping?

Thanks all for the replies. Ok, I've built up my courage and ordered the DME based extract kit. Looks like I'll be brewing some Irish Red Ale this weekend!

    Tips to Prevent DME Clumping?

Hi all, I've completed two brew batches now. Both were full boil and used LME which I'm comfortable with. I've come across a beer recipe kit from MoreBeer! that is only available locally in DME form. I've heard that DME has a tendency to clump when added to the heated or boiling water. Are...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Hi all, Ok, the stuck fermentation drama is now officially over. I took another specific gravity today and it was again 1.019/18. With the help of my daughter, into the bottles it went and can now forget about it. I'll check-in, in about two or three weeks and let you know how it turned out...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Hi all, Vikeman and jsphlynch may have a point. The minimal airlock activity I'm seeing may be just a product of the increased temperate range and the temp ossilation that's occuring within that new range (viz. 68 to 73 degrees F). I took another specific gravity reading yesterday (four days...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Hi all, I decided to rouse the yeast and increase the temperature. Previoulsy the temp was occilating between 64 and 68 degrees F. Now it's 69 to 72 degrees F. I'm still using a little ice to keep it in that range. I'm now seeing a little airlock activity. I took a specific gravity yesterday...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Hi all, I've ordered some more S-33 yeast. It should be here on Saturday. I really don't have a local brew store close to me, so it's either an online purchase or a 45 + mile out-of-town-trip for me. The latter would have to wait till Saturday anyway due to work. I checked the hydrometer. At...

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I'm using a hydrometer that came with the MoreBeer! Premium kit. I believe it is this one: https://www.morebeer.com/products/beer-wine-hydrometer-correction-scale.html

    Is this Stuck Fermentation?

Hi all, I'm a brand new home brewer and working on my 2nd batch. My first was a extract kit that I purchased from MoreBeer! and was an American Red Ale. It was so much better than I was expecting for my first beer! I'm totally hooked. I came across a clone recipe for St. Stan's Red Sky Ale and...
