1st all grain, high og, low volume

Thanks - you're right about learning how ones own system works. I had my extract routine down after 5 batches, and it'll take a few all-grains to get the hang of it

1st all grain, high og, low volume

I just brewed an oatmeal stout - my 1st all grain. I read in John Palmer's book that you should stop lautering when the wort coming out of the mash tun is 1.008. I did and started the boil at approx 6.11 gals. After the boil I ended up with far less than 5 gals and a OG of 1.070 - I was supposed...

    What to brew in December?

Thanks! - some great ideas here. A Belgian Dubbel, samichlaus clone, speckled hen,... and a calendar to tell me what's apropo to brew every month. Now I'm ready

    What to brew in December?

I brewed a holiday spiced ale last month, and an oatmeal stout to be brewed this weekend. I've done a batch a month since June. But I'm at a loss as to what to brew in December. A lot of "winter" ales I'm researching are a lot like my holiday ale. I need to do something different - somewhat...

    Stout as 1st all grain?

I like pale ales, IPA's, and the harvest ale I just brewed. But I've had maybe 20 stouts recently, and I'm getting attached to them. Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin is awesome. Nothing is better than a steak dinner with a few stouts.

    Stout as 1st all grain?

Thanks, I have read that stouts should age a while - good thing I have about 150 bottles of my previous batches stockpiled to last the winter

    Stout as 1st all grain?

My niece's husband and the guy at the brew store have helped immensely so far, and I won't hesitate to ask for more help.

    Stout as 1st all grain?

Thanks for the advice! I went to Home Depot last week for a cooler for the mash tun. I couldn't find one - the girls at the front desk said they were out of season and they didn't have any. I explained to an older guy working there that I needed one to make beer. That perked him to the point...

    Stout as 1st all grain?

I'm thinking of doing a stout. But should I attempt a stout for my first all grain? Or something else? I've done 6 extract batches. I'm ready to move on.

    Brewery names--what's your story?

The Feisty Bluegill Brewery Named after after a feisty bluegill I saw swimming in the lake in my back yard. All of my beers are named after things I see in the back yard

    Bad Nottingham Experiment with Pics

I finally started airlock activity somewhere between 48 and 58 hours. In the future I'll have more yeast to pitch on standby in case this problem happens again.

    Bad Nottingham Experiment with Pics

I just asked you experts for help with my yeast problem in "No airlock bubbling". I got a few good pointers there. I brewed about 42 hours ago. No fermentation so far. Then I read this thread. I used exactly the same yeast as the op - same lot. i'm such a newbie (3 batches) that I assumed I was...

    No airlock bubbling

I just brewed my 3rd batch - all Brewers Best kits. This one is an IPA with Nottingham dry yeast. The brewing instructions say to sprinkle the contents of the yeast packet over the wort. I did this on my first batch and everything was ok and tasted great, but with mild airlock bubbling for...

    Hello from Illinois!

I've been lurking a few months and find this place entertaining and full of helpful info. I've been brewing since the end of June - on my 3rd batch - all from extract kits.
