    Sluggish Yeast question

Thanks BigFloyd. Duly noted. I think I may need to pitch a third smackpack - this time with a starter!

    Sluggish Yeast question

I'm going through this now with the same yeast. I didn't do a starter, but rather pitched the smack=pack straight to the wort. After 36 hours, no signs of life. So I visited my LHBS and bought a fresh smackpack. Smacked it, waited the requisite 3 hours. It had swelled a little, but not ready to...

    My Wood Brew-traption (brew stand)

Update: Since I built this last February, I've brewed 2 different Alt-biers, an Oktoberfest, a Cream Ale, a Bavarian Hefe, and a Honey Brown Ale. I absolutely enjoy brewing using my brew-traption. Love the mobility it provides as well as the organizational aspects of it. On the backside (tall...

Bottling from keg for long-term storage

I have bottled from kegs using the device described in this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/we-no-need-no-stinking-beer-gun-24678/, which is simply a racking cane and a stopper with a hole in it. It worked well, and I've cracked open bottles 7 to 8 months later and the carbonation was...

Yep. It just laughed at it.

    Krud/Crud in picnic faucet

Thanks for the tip Bob. I've tried the PBW with no luck, so on to the Oxy, then Clorox, and if that fails I'll see if I can find one of these nitric acid-based cleaners mentioned in the link that bullinachinashop posted. This is some really tough stuff! Not that I care a whole lot...

    Krud/Crud in picnic faucet

Aaah, beer stone. I've heard of that but never knew what it was. That would make sense. Thanks for the link.

    Krud/Crud in picnic faucet

Good point. But, I'm kinda wondering if all 4 of my active taps are undergoing this issue. If they are, replacing all of them wouldn't be cost-prohibitive either, but I'd like to get a handle on it before switching over to Perlick faucets - which I plan to do one day. If I get this kind of...

Soooo, no one has ever seen/had this?

    Krud/Crud in picnic faucet

Wow! I've never seen this before, but as I was disassembling one of my kegs and its' lines last night for cleaning, I discovered a black, hardened mess inside the picnic tap, caked on the white silicon seal (I guess that's what you'd call it). I was able to fingernail some of it off, but a lot...

    Water TOO pure?

The well water at my home is even lower in minerals than yours, and I have brewed some kickass beers - several Altbiers, a Bourbon-barrel Porter, even a dark smoked lager that finished at 10.5% abv, as well as a light hefeweizen and a very nice light summery cream ale - ALL of them with no...

    Inconsistent Efficiency

My mash tun has a deadspace of .3 gallon. Of course, there is grain absorption to account for, but it seems my beers with bigger grain bills are producing higher efficiencies. I do - every 15 minutes I open up the tun and stir and take temperature readings in multiple locations...

    Inconsistent Efficiency

I crush my own. I bought the 2-roller Monster Mill last October. I checked the setting on it when I got it and didn't see the need to change it, as the crush looks really good. I am also not sure if I should be paying more attention to "brewhouse efficiency" as opposed to "mash efficiency"...

    Inconsistent Efficiency

From brew to brew, my efficiencies are all over the place. It's driving me nuts. I'm using Beersmith, and knowing your setup's efficiency beforehand comes in handy when creating recipes. Differing efficiencies can significantly alter the end result in relation to what you were expecting...
