Large mouth carboy from Northern Brewer

For a test drive. Dry hopped a Pliny Clone...It was a pleasure. It even has a built-in airlock (which I had to contact Midwest to figure out what it was)...Snap it on over the hole (or you can use a bung), add sanitizer to the well in the cap, and you have an airlock.

Large mouth carboy from Northern Brewer

These are definitely on my X-Mas list. Dry hopping with whole leaf hops was the first thing I thought off...Such a pain to pain a few OZs of whole leaf in a carboy neck. Also love the screw on top.

Chest Freezer & Temp Controller Setup Questions

Anyone see any issues with wrapping carboy in blanket or sweatshirt and resting on towel in chest freezer to conserve some heat? Temps may dip in the basement and want to keep temp up.

Chest Freezer & Temp Controller Setup Questions

Appreciate it...Yup- Was going to keep it cool for first 3-4 days, then adjust the temp to ensure it doesn't get too cool.

Chest Freezer & Temp Controller Setup Questions

I do. I figure if I pitch yeast at around 64, once it kicks off it should rise to 66-68 area. The controller would kick on if the probe hits 68. I don't have capability to heat at the moment.

Chest Freezer & Temp Controller Setup Questions

Hello Hello. Sorry for a new thread on this topic, but I have a brand spanking new chest freezer in my basement and a Johnson A419, which will be delivered today. I am brewing tomorrow, and want to get this right. Here's the plan: -Tape probe to glass carboy and cover with bubble wrap, too...

    "Big" Starter Question

So...Mr. Malty is saying this: (based on 6 gallons in fermenter..OG- 1.072, with intermittent shaking) # of cells need (in billions): 297 # vials or packs needed without starter: 3.1 # of vials or packs need with starter: 2 # liters of starter required: 1.15 So I guess, when it comes...

    "Big" Starter Question

    yes...lol. Confused myself there.

    "Big" Starter Question

Thanks for the feedback. No stirplate, just shaking it when I have a chance. So...bottom line: I am good to go as planned? The goal is just to introduce plenty of healthy, hungry yeast into my wort.

    "Big" Starter Question

I plan on making a Pliny clone on Saturday, and always do a starter and typically do 1qt water + .5 cup DME. My plan is to do a big starter this evening with 2 Vials WLP001. I plan to essentially double the White Labs guidance, so: 4 pints water + 1 cup DME + 2 vials of WLP001. Have it...

Decision Time: Fermentation Chamber VS Keezer

    I went with this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-5-0-cu-ft-Chest-Freezer-in-White-FCM5SUWW/203547584?N=c3nr

Decision Time: Fermentation Chamber VS Keezer

I went with a 5.0 cubic FT GE chest freezer....That's the biggest I can fit in my basement. It will hold one 6.5 gallon carboy. The Johnson temp controller is on the way as well. I could still grab a kep setup and use the freezer....WIN WIN.

Decision Time: Fermentation Chamber VS Keezer

Hello Hello. So I have a budget of about $500 to upgrade my brewery. Space is limited, so anything I add will be in the basement. The question is: Do I spend the $$$ on a fermentation chamber (Chest freezer/Mini Fridge & Temp controller)? Or chest freezer + keg system. Option #1: My...

2 Different Brews, Same Yeast, Same Off-Flavor:

Thanks for the reply...Yes, these two are the last two I have made. I have not made any changes to my cleaning process, I only use PBW + hot water overnight, dump in morning, then refill with hot, clean water. Edit: In total, I made 3 beers with the WLP090 slurries. One in May? = No off...

2 Different Brews, Same Yeast, Same Off-Flavor:

So I posted this https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/soapy-taste-session-ipa-438992/ thread on 10/24 after tasting a session IPA in which I detected a "soapy flavor". Last night, I tasted a pumpkin ale I brewed using a slurry of WLP090 that was sitting in the fridge since April (both beers were...

    Soapy Taste in Session IPA

Also this brew finished very very dry...1.006. I would imagine that would have some effect.

    Soapy Taste in Session IPA

Yup...There are a lot of threads here about it, but I noticed that Cascade is a commonly cited culprit. It's a soapy-like bitterness. My fiancee didn't pick up on it. And I love hoppy beers.

    Soapy Taste in Session IPA

Sorry for the new thread, as I realize there are a bunch on the "soapy taste" issue. Cracked one of these last night, after about 13 days in the bottle (I realize it's still young), but I detected a soapy-like bitterness to it. My lady did not agree with me. -I see that cascade hops are a...
