What did you learn this week?

I learned that you should take your mash tun size into consideration when deciding to do a large party-gyle brew w/ 26lbs of grain! (luckily I discovered this before starting my mash so I could adjust the recipe for a regular mash)

    star san in keg

I have been storing my kegs with the remains of the Star San. Using the properly diluted solution to half of the keg, I shake it around for a while, and then dump them and leave the small amount of it in the bottom.... Is it better to fill them to the top with the Star San solution and store...

First Brew Fermenting Away (Belgian Tripel)

Beer is looking great, and good choice with the Belgian! My ingredients should be here tomorrow, brewing it for my next batch on Saturday! One word of advice you'll probably hear, I know it is tempting to take a look at it as it changes but I would keep that thing closed down unless you need to...

    Whereto next

A lot of good information posted here. I'm a new brewer myself and will say I am glad that I began with Extract brewing. You can get your start without investing a huge amount of money into it, and upgrade cost to all grain are much easier when you have the basic equipment. It will help you...

First Brew Problems and Second Brew Ideas

For your first- Bitterness in beer typically comes from hops. What was your boil addition schedule on the beer? Also when it comes to beer involving whiskey it typically gets much better and flavors mellow out with time. Many kits involving bourbon barrel brewing ask for 6-month conditioning...

Poor Man's Dual Keg 'Tower' Kegerator

This is a build that doesn't suit everyone's needs, but it seems to be perfect for me at the current time. I have a mini-fridge from college that I have bent the freezer portion down in order to allow 2 corneys to fit in. I don't want to spend the money for a dual tap tower as my money is...

First timer dident read the intructions

Don't sweat it too much, we all have made little mistakes, this isn't a huge deal. I would assume that the carboy you have is a 5 gal as others have said, which means there is very little head space. When the fermentation gets going it will likely be going over the top and clogging your airlock...

Fermentation chamber built with modified upright refrigerator.

I bought an aquarium thermostat off of ebay to use for my mini-fridge fermenter so I have that hooked up keeping it where I need it. I don't plan to do any lagering anytime soon, so it should work out well for what I need! I'll look at getting a fan put in there!

    Integrated Kitchen Brewery/Keezer build

I love the fact that you didn't post this as just an idea, but you started tearing **** out of your new house to go through with it! Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Fermentation chamber built with modified upright refrigerator.

Bump. Anyone have any ideas if this front plate heater thing is just to keep the door from freezing shut? And should I look to put a fan in here to keep the air moving or should it stay constant enough as is?

Fermentation chamber built with modified upright refrigerator.

Well, I have been fermenting in my mini fridge to maintain the right temp, I have been looking for a larger place so I can ferment more than one beer at a time. I went to an auction yesterday and picked up an upright fridge for $25, quick measurements before the auction I knew this would fit 2...

pitched yeast too high temp, add more?

Looks good to me. The majority of the fermentation is likely complete, but it will "Flatten" out over time as you don't have much pressure (like a cap) to keep it from escaping. Give it it's time to finish and clean up and you'll have a fine beer!

pitched yeast too high temp, add more?

You can aerate right after pitching, but like chumpsteak said, the 02 is only used by the yeast for the very early stages and it is not good to induce 02 into your beer beyond that point, so you shouldn't be shaking it up once the yeast have had their opportunity to start reproducing.

How do you know if you washed yeast correctly?

Thanks Guys! I'm not exactly sure what "bear" smells like, but if it taste like beer i'll call it good :D As for making the starter, I do not have a flask at this point, what other containers would work well as a starter? and how long do you do the starter before brewing? Should I stick it in...

    bottle conditioning

Some of the "Junk" is likely from the bottle conditioning, But it isn't all necessarily... Could be debris that hasn't settled out yet when you bottle... Hops, yeast, grains, or any other ingredient that was used. You will likely reduce debris in the beer, but it doesn't mean you won't have any.

How do you know if you washed yeast correctly?

When I bottled my last batch, I was getting ready to dump the yeast cake and thought to myself "I should see what this whole washing yeast thing is about". Without a real thought of using the yeast, I thought it would be a good thing to get practice with none the less. I didn't have any mason...

Bought the wrong yeast, WYeast 1007 for an IPA?

Well, Decided to take a peak at how it was going and it seems the yeast are really liking the beer! Keep in mind I have the temp sensor is taped to the fermentation bucket and is reading right at 15.5* C The Beer already smells amazing!

Bought the wrong yeast, WYeast 1007 for an IPA?

By the time I pitched it had not quite 3 hours, more likely between 2 and 2 and a half hours of activation. The pack was swollen, and it is working away now in the chamber at 60*... I'll hope for the best!

Bought the wrong yeast, WYeast 1007 for an IPA?

Thanks Guys! Pitched the yeast last night, it is hanging out in my chamber now! The only slight concern I have is with the minor adjustments I made to the kit my OG was 1.070, Will this be too much on this yeast?
