Less than satisfied with my first brew

I steeped for 45 minutes at 155F. @Revvy, I will not touch the beer for another week and see if it's improved.

Less than satisfied with my first brew

It's sitting at 66, and it's been 3 weeks. I really have no warmer place to move it. Is there something I can do to raise the temperature of the closet?

Less than satisfied with my first brew

When the grain bag didn't get fully submerged, I just smooshed it to the bottom of the pan. That might be what did it. I feel more optimistic this morning about my next brew. As I mentioned a few posts ago there are two things that I will do differently this time, so I am hoping for better...

Less than satisfied with my first brew

Here's Rockville water report. http://www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/water.html It appears that there is chlorine in there.

Less than satisfied with my first brew

    Just using this kit http://www.northernbrewer.com/default/belgian-tripel-extract-kit-2.html

Less than satisfied with my first brew

Most of the water I boiled came from my refrigirator, which uses this filter. 1.0 - 1.5 gallons was just plain boiled water. I was really hoping to avoid worrying about water quality while I did extract brewing, and only start researching it when I got into all-grain. I guess I can try just...

Less than satisfied with my first brew

@Hockeyhunter99, at the moment I am really digging Belgians, so I am going to attempt a tripel.

Less than satisfied with my first brew

My brew closet appears to be around 64. And I guess my yeast is working. My gravity went from 1.050 to 1.011 in two weeks. If it was too cold, the yeast would just go dormant. The problem is, I am not sure what I did wrong. I looked over my notes, and I think I might have noticed two things...

Less than satisfied with my first brew

I have a yeast starer chilling in the fridge a tripel kit ready to go. I am really worried about me fermentation temperature though.

Less than satisfied with my first brew

5 weeks ago I brewed the witbier kit from northern brewer. 2 weeks later, when my gravity was a stable 1.010 I bottled. Today I cracked open my first bottle, and I was disappointed. First, the carbonation didn't feel right. There was very little head retention and the bubbles were not quite...

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

Mine is gunky already, as you can guess from my first post. I'll probably use aluminum foil next time. It will be much easier to sanitize anyway.

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

Well, i am not using an airlock, but a foam stopper, which should let the air in. (not my photo)

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

I am looking forward to brewing my Tripel. As soon as my primary fermentation is complete, i'll brew something else because the Triple will not be ready till mid May or so.

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

When I get home tonight, it will be close to 43 hours or so. I can probably just stick in the fridge already.

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

I will try that for my next starter, thanks! How do I know when it's done though?

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

It was Wyeast 3787. I also made quite a large starter, since I only had one packet and OG is suppose to get 1.073. How long should I keep my yeast on the strir plate though? I was planning on around 48 hours on plate, and 48 hours in the fridge. Then decant, dilute with some cooled, boiled water...

Crausen pushed out the foam stopper in the starter flask

After about 20 hours, I checked up on my starter sitting on my stir plate and the crausen has pushed out the foam stopper. I rinsed off all the gunk from the foam stopper, resanitized it and replaced it. I don't have a blow off tube that will fit my flask, so what can I do? I am not really...

If my starter wort boiled over, is it still ok to use?

Yeah, i know you were joking. I am just glad it happened with a small starer rather than a 3 gallon boil.

If my starter wort boiled over, is it still ok to use?

I don't know. I probably would've come crying for help here. I've always seen that boilovers are bad and messy, but never seen on what do with it.

If my starter wort boiled over, is it still ok to use?

Probably a silly question, but when making a starter for the first time yesterday it boiled over during the 30 seconds I looked away. I dumped the whole thing and re-made it. Could i have still used what was in the flask? It didn't look like I lost too much liquid.
