Broke my hydrometer. Can I transfer to secondary without a reading?

Oh, and I just started reading that link and the first thing it says it that you don't need secondary unless you are planning to add fruit or dry hop. I'd like to dry hop this batch so that sounds like another good reason to go to secondary.

Broke my hydrometer. Can I transfer to secondary without a reading?

I could do that but I was thinking that because I didn't separate it from the trub after the boil (just poured it all in the primary) that it could probably use the secondary stage for clearing. Plus I'd rather get it out of the ale pale and into the glass carboy. I think if I was going to skip...

Broke my hydrometer. Can I transfer to secondary without a reading?

Quick history. This is only my 4th batch of beer. I just started hanging around on HBT.com, and I think from what I've gathered by reading old threads that I had always transfered to secondary too soon. Usually only after 5-7 days. So with this batch I wanted to try and do right, be patient, and...

    What should I build?

I just realized I have about 15 feet of old copper AC line left over from an old AC unit that we recently replaced. I'm trying to figure out what I can do with it. I'm thinking some sort of wort chiller. There are two separate 15 foot lines. One looks to be 3/8 and the other looks to be about 1...

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

Found some tonight hidden in the back of a box at one of the smaller hardware stores in town. I think I might have bought the last ones. We'll see if they get any more in or not.

Phase 2 brewery build progress shots

I don't even know what I'm looking at and I'm still impressed.

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

I'm going to try one more hardware store and if that doesn't work out, I think mcmaster looks like a good solution. Thanks for the link. Now I just need to finish planning out my wort chiller design.

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

I just so happen to have a guy coming out to the house on Wednesday to put in an AC unit. Maybe I'll try to get some from him.

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

I'm not sure which way is the correct either. All I know is the box the tube came in say 3/8 OD and the sweat fittings that they had labeled as 3/8, were all too big to fit over the outside of the tube I had. I imagine 1/4 fittings would have worked but they didn't have anything smaller than...

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

I'll check home Depot and Lowe's to make sure but Menards did have a pretty good selection. They had lots of fittings for 3/8 tube, but that size tube is based on the inner diameter of the tube. What I have is slightly smaller. It has an outer diameter of 3/8, which means it's just a little too...

fittings for 3/8 od copper tube

I have two 20 ft. sections of 3/8 outer diameter copper tubing that my father donated to me that I'd like to convert into a wort chiller. Mendards didn't have anything other than a few different compression fittings to fit that size tube. I'd rather solder the fittings. Anyone know if there is...

    Kettle to Primary

Thanks for the response. I get that it will all settle eventually and since I'm going to rack to secondary, and I remembered to use my irish moss this time, I'm not too worried about the trub any more. I guess I was mostly worried about all the hops that are now in my fermenter. I had 4oz. in...

    Kettle to Primary

Is there any reason you do this? Just because it's easier or do you actually prefer the way the beer turns out when you do it this way?

    Kettle to Primary

No, I didn't know. Like I said. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not really in the loop with the whole home community. I actually didn't even know today was national home brew day until someone at my LHBS (Siciliano's) said something to me when I stopped in to get supplies for the IPA.

    Kettle to Primary

Ok, I just brewed a batch an IPA today. (It is national home brew day after all.) So anyway, I've done a couple batches before with some friends but this was the first one I've done on my own and now I'm worried that I might have messed it up. I didn't siphon or filter the brew when I transfered...

Understanding Hydrometer to know when to transfer

Thanks for the great advice. Sounds like maybe I rushed it though. It had been at 1.02 for two days though and I thought that meant it was done. Is there something I may have done that would have caused the yeast to stall out. I'm pretty sure the temp never got below 64º. Was it possibly that I...

Understanding Hydrometer to know when to transfer

Ok, so I'm pretty new to this. This is my first post. I'm brewing my 3rd batch right now, a partial grain recipe for an ESB that I picked up at my LHBS. Up till now I've pretty much just followed the directions and crossed my fingers but now I'm looking to make better beer and it seems I need to...
