    My Lable

I'm a graphic designer by trade so it's kind of what I do for a living. Technically though, I just print them out on a laser printer, 8 up on and 8x11 sheet of paper, cut them out and use spray glue to stick them to the bottles.

Need help with water volume for first BIAB partial mash

I don't mind critique. I'm going for a Founders Red's Rye type beer. But I wanted to to use more rye and a different hop profile. Founders actually has another beer on tap called foreign spy rye that I love so I was kind of trying to do a mix of both even though there isn't any recipe info on...

Need help with water volume for first BIAB partial mash

I was originally hoping to do this all in one pot as described here http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4650 but I suppose I can borrow a second turkey fryer set up and use two pots if needed. Thanks for plugging this in to Beer Smith. I'm actually a Mac user and I...

Need help with water volume for first BIAB partial mash

I originally left this out of my recipe but a fellow brewer who I highly respect suggested adding a little. We realize it may not be necessary for BIAB but thought it couldn't hurt to add a little. If it turns out I don't have a big enough pot to pull this off I may loose them again. Thanks...

Need help with water volume for first BIAB partial mash

What exactly are you saying? Do I have too much grain in my recipe to pull this off in a 7.5 gallon pot? I doubt I can get 7 gallons of water and all the grain in my pot. I suppose I could always alter my recipe to use less grain and more DME.

Need help with water volume for first BIAB partial mash

I plan to do my first BIAB next weekend. Because it's my first, and I don't know what my efficiency will be, I've planned it as a partial mash so I can calculate the right amount of extract I need at the end to hit my target O.G.. I think I have my recipe and everything planned out pretty well...

    First contest/first Part. Mash Suggestions

Funny that you mention the founders. I've been a mug club member at Founders for 6 years now and the Reds Rye is one of my favorite beers they make. Even better than that though is a new beer they have on tap right now called "Foreign Spy Rye". http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/65932 It...

    First contest/first Part. Mash Suggestions

I've brewed about 10 extract batches and I think I'm ready to progress to partial mash. So I'm looking for some recommendations on what style would be good for a first partial mash. I'm thinking something light like a kolsh or a reds rye. I usually do a lot of pale ale and IPA so I'm looking for...

    Caramel 20 vs. Crystal 20

    This is helpful. Thanks.

    Caramel 20 vs. Crystal 20

I had a feeling they might be the same thing. Is there any easy reference like a chart or something somewhere for different malts that are really the same thing? Or is there a trick to knowing which ones are the same? I'm sure caramel 20 and crystal 20 are not the only ones.

    Caramel 20 vs. Crystal 20

I'm new to brewing and brew software, and since I don't know all of the ingredients that well yet, for me, the hardest part is trying to figure out what to select in my software (Beeralchemy) when a malt isn't already in the default list. I'm trying to add a recipe that I found online which...

    founders foreign spy rye

Here is what I was able to find out. It is 20% rye malt as apposed to Red's rye which is only about 5%. Hops used are Magnum, Simcoe, Centennial, and Amarillo.

    founders foreign spy rye

Anyone from the area had the new Foreign Spy Rye at Founders? I'm in love with this beer and would like to know if anyone who has tried it has any ideas on how to make one. I personally find it very similar to their reds rye but with more hop character. I'm heading down tonight and will see what...

American IPA MY 60 minute IPA

I'm interested in trying this recipe and I'm curious why you went with a 75 min boil but don't start your hops until 60 min.

    adding hops before boil

I like the way that sounds.

    adding hops before boil

It sounds like it's pretty close but not quite, according to this article I just found, (see last paragraph) The hops should be steeped for 20-30 min before the boil. http://www.brewersfriend.com/2009/05/09/first-wort-hopping/

    adding hops before boil

When I first looked up First Wart Hopping it said that it was adding hops during sparging. I kind of figured the extract equivalent would be adding hops while steeping the specialty grains. I had already finished steeping and was just waiting for the boil to start and wasn't really sure if the...

    adding hops before boil

I always come into my brew sessions with a real strong plan, but somehow everything always ends up going a little differently when I actually brew. I always get these spur-of-the-moment crazy ideas to do something a little different than I had planned. Maybe it has something to with the friends...

    BeerAlchemy adding extract/timing question

Never mind, I got it figured out.

    BeerAlchemy adding extract/timing question

Ok, so I was originally using a trial version when I asked this question. Today I purchased the software and I went to create a new recipe and now for some reason I can't change the time at all. I can't even choose between the three options it gives me. Is this a bug or something with the new...
