    Couple questions about adding honey

First off, this is my fist batch of cider. I've brewed lots of beer, but never a cider. Anyway, I have 4 gallons of cider that has been happily fermenting with Lalvin D47 for about a week now. Just today, I was offered 5 lbs. of pure honey from a friend at work who keeps bees. Can't turn that...

    New to cider questions

Oh, and about the yeast nutrient. What is the best process for using this? Do I just sprinkle it in, or do I need to dissolve it in something first?

    New to cider questions

I've been brewing beer for a while but this is my fist cider. I kind of decided to do it on a whim because my wife likes it and a good friend was doing it. So anyway, he picked me up 4 gallons of fresh pressed juice from a local orchard yesterday. He put some Camden tabs in it for me when he...

    Aluminum Pot/oxidation layer is myth?

I suppose the way I asked the question at the beginning may have been confusing or even a little misleading. To clarify, I don't doubt the fact that there is a real oxide layer that builds up on, and protects aluminum. I was really more getting at weather or not we as brewers have to worry about it.

Any reason to let sit in primary after terminal gravity

Patience is not a problem for me, I have a pretty decent pipeline going and I honestly can't keep up with drinking all the beer I make. I was actually kind of wondering if I was letting it set too long for no good reason. No point in letting it set 6 weeks if it was done at 4.

Any reason to let sit in primary after terminal gravity

As the title says, is there any reason to let the beer sit in primary for any amount of time after terminal gravity is reached? Is the yeast still doing anything, ie. cleaning up the beer (not really sure what that means) after terminal gravity is reached?

when to let temp raise for safale05

Thanks a lot for the thought out answer, it does help a lot. As of now I don't have a very accurate way of controlling my fermentation temp. I do however have a few spots in my house that are pretty reliable. For my last batch I chilled my beer down to 50ºF and pitched the yeast. I placed the...

    BIAB keggle false bottom

Here is one I built. from a pizza rack that I picked up at Gordon Foods https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/my-new-false-bottom-will-work-229624/ Or something like this. http://www.lionsdeal.com/pwc-47098-18.html Another idea is a flour sieve. They have a very fine mesh bottom...

when to let temp raise for safale05

For me the confusing part is the "raise naturally" part. How fast and how high it raises naturally would be greatly effected by the ambient temp at which you store your fermenter.

when to let temp raise for safale05

I've heard the best thing to do for fermentation of an ale is to pitch cooler and let the temp come up naturally during fermentation, but no one ever really gives any more detail about how long it should stay on the low end and when to let it raise. I brewed an amber ale, chilled it to about...

My new false bottom. Will it work?

True, but its kind of fun to have custom made parts too.:)

My new false bottom. Will it work?

You just reminded me that my cousin works at a machine shop. And he use to home brew. Don't know why I didn't think about that before. I called him and he is going to make me some little legs out of aluminum bar. I'll post new pics once I get it sorted.

My new false bottom. Will it work?

I checked and called around to the local hardware stores and haven't been able to find aluminum Machine Bolts. I may have to explore the brass route.

My new false bottom. Will it work?

Yeah, my pot is aluminum, which is why I went with the aluminum screen route. It's technically a pizza screen too, but it only cost me $4... plus a couple bucks for the screws. I'm a little nervous about buying something online because there is no guarantee it will actually fit in my pot which...

My new false bottom. Will it work?

That is a nice thought but I'd rather keep this cheep and simple for the time being. On the other hand I wouldn't mind purchasing different bolts if there is another type of metal that would be better suited to be in contact with the aluminum grate. For instance I almost purchased galvanized...

My new false bottom. Will it work?

On a side note. I thought it was pretty crazy how when I pulled it out of the water after a half hour boil it was cold to the touch within 5 second. Seriously, it was ice cold when I expected it to be hot. That was crazy.

My new false bottom. Will it work?

Well I decided to boil it in some water for about a half hour before it's inaugural use this weekend and it turned pretty black. Hope that's normal.

My new false bottom. Will it work?

I just built this false bottom for BIAB. Basically the only purpose it needs to serve is to keep the grain bag off the bottom of the pot so it doesn't melt during mash out or if I should need to bring up the temp of the mash for any other reason. My only real concern with it is that the grid is...

    Taylor TruTemp Digital Thermometer...

On a mac you use option 0 (zero) like this "70º". I would assume you could do something similar on a P.C. maybe alt 0 or control 0. I don't know, it's probably been 10 years since I've used a P.C.. Try a few and see what works.
