If vorlaufing is so unnecessary, why do people still do it so much?

Without seeing the video, was the look of paper towel the hot break from the boil floating on the surface? Other than some loose grain that sneaks through on most setups, ive never seen that much debris in the wort.

    Anyone brewing with dandelion root?

My inlaws have been making dandelion wine for generations and they use the open yellow flower. They have to pick them in the middle of day so they are as big as possible. Always wanted to try a beer just never have. I know Magic Hat made a dandelion beer a few years back.

    Discouraged

Good luck, im sure you will figure it out. For the longest time i couldnt brew an ipa for the life of me. They all had that "homebrew/metal" after taste and muted hops. Ended up being my water. Still not sure whether it was ph or minerals, because i adjusted both on the brew that fixed the...

Coffee Stout, Adding Crushed/Ground Coffee to Secondary

I always put coffee beans in a muslin bag and smack them with a meat mallet a few times, just enough to break them up. Throw the bag in fermenter for a week or so depending on the flavor I want. No harshness or tanin taste a very easy to do. You do have to use slightly more beans than using...

    Discouraged

Were the beers with off flavors a different recipe/style than the rest? Beers with less adjunct malts increase flaws in your water profile and other processes. Darker beers usually hide them better. In my lighter colored beers, I get a trub like harshness when my water is too high in sodium...

    Thermoelectric cooler?

No, haven't really had the time to check it out. I'm thinking that I went to low on the AC/DC adapter. It is 6A. With the two fans and TEC I should of went 10-12A.

    Thermoelectric cooler?

Just updating this for anybody that may have info on it. Was working fine and was able to chill it down about 25 degrees below ambient. Went to cold crash today and heard a popping sound. I didnt want to burn out my temp controller so i unplugged the thermochiller. Sent from my iPhone using...

    Grainfather!!

I brewed a "Tiny" by weyerbacher clone. no sparge was used due to the massive grain bill (3 gallon batch, using 6 gallons of strike water). Got 65% mash eff with no issues using rice hulls. I also brewed a normal pale ale without a sparge (laziness) and got 76% eff, but with a very fine crush...

    Thermoelectric cooler?

Ok, so I made a DIY conical fermenter that fit perfectly into an old wine cooler I never used. I didn't take my time to research where to drill for temp prob/heat wrap plug and destroyed the frion line. So, here is my question. Has anyone used a TEC installed in the back to chill the fridge...

    Grainfather!!

Did my first batch a week ago. I got lazy since I was short on time and aimed at doing a 3 gallon batch without a sparge (like an eBIAB). Used a little over 4 gallons of water to mash in. I crushed very fine expecting low mash eff, which ended up getting me a stuck mash when I pulled up the...

32 Qt. Aluminum Pot at Walmart $21.47

Most likely. I currently have a bazooka screen and there seems to be ample room with the steamer on it. I have used it as a base for biab from time to time.

32 Qt. Aluminum Pot at Walmart $21.47

I actually have this and use it for 3-5 gallon batches on the stove. I have a weldless valve and bazooka screen on it. Can't beat it for the price.

How to order a beer at a National chain restaurant

"The best beer I ever had -- after years of homebrewing, myself -- was a pitcher of Bud Light with my granddad shortly before he passed." Best statement I've read about BMC beers. Well said.

Talk to me about 3 gallon batches

I do three gallon batches a lot for the same reasons you mention. I got (2) 2.5 gallon kegs that I just rotate in my kegerator. If I want to experiment, I'll do a 5 gallon and split it. I just did a coffee stout, kegged half and have the other half sitting on bourbon cubes.

    Bourbon County Barleywine attempt

Forgot to mention, i'm mashing at 148 to give the yeast a fighting chance. After considering your advice, I may lower the roast. However, if I keep it and it still ends up a solid beer, no harm done. Seems like worst case I will have a sweeter, more "roasty", beer on my hands which may...

    Bourbon County Barleywine attempt

I was thinking the same with the final gravity. I'm pitching a lot of yeast for only a 3 gallon batch. I may split the two starters (1.5-2 lt each), adding the brown sugar after a couple days in the primary with fresh yeast.

    Bourbon County Barleywine attempt

I didnt see a thread on this, so I just took a guess using Goose Islands website. I couldnt find Pilgrim hops anywhere, so I replaced. I also added some roasted barley since they age the barleywine in barrels that were already used to age the stout in. Im planning on brewing it in the...
