    Bug in my brew!

The hops I picked this year had little critters running around in them. I figure if they survived picking, maybe the drying process will get them, if not then maybe the vacuum bagger got them. If not then the freezer should do them in. If that doesn't do it, I'll drop them into a big vat of...

Bursting bottles: Urban Legend or yeah, it can happen?

I've had a couple of my early batches leak out the bottlecaps, and were gushers when opened, but never a broken bottle. Mine were all bottled too early or overcarbed, no infections so I can't say what would happer there.

Pounds of Grain per Volume of Water

For 10 lbs of grain I will use 10 to 12 quarts of water. I use an old stoneware canner and this about fills it up. I just picked up a 10 gallon water cooler so I can start step mashing and using more strike water. Not sure if this answers your question, I don't really understand what you mean by...

Pounds of Grain per Volume of Water

I mash with 1 to1.2 quarts of water per pound of grain, most of my batches are 10 lbs. of grain per about 5 gallons, give or take a little, and I start my boil with just about 6 gallons of wort.

    Any idea what'll happen?

Yeah, not good for a stout, might be an interesting process to make a light American lager insteat of using enzymes in the secondary. This is about where I figured it would finish with that low mashing temp.

    Any idea what'll happen?

Post your final gravity if you get a chance. Curious to see where it finishes. I'm betting it will be a *DRY* dry stout

American Pale Ale Nierra Sevada (Session SNPA Clone)

Well I fell a little off on my post boil volume and wound up with just under 6 gallons of 1.046 wort. It's cold and windy here and my kettle just wouldn't get a good hard boil going, more of a lightly rolling boil. Looking at a 4.4 abv. with an IBU of 32 if it finishes at 1.012. With the extra...

Your favorite type of drinking glass?

As long as it's full of my favorite brew, it's my favorite glass:D All kidding asside. I also have Pilsener type glasses and heavy glass mugs that were bought at the local dollar store. I keep the mugs in the freezer for my summer quaffers and use the pilsener glasses for the rest of my brews.

American Pale Ale Nierra Sevada (Session SNPA Clone)

This is in the boiling kettle as I type. For a 5.5 gallon batch I used 9 lbs pale 2-row, .5 lb. caramel 60L, (Assuming this is like crystal malt, all my brewstore had), and .5 carapils. I also subbed the pearl hopps for .4 oz. Pacific Jade for bittering, kept the IBU's the same, and will dry...

What should my first AG brew be?

My choice would be a simple smash recipe using 10 lbs. 2 row and 2 oz. cascade hops. 5 gallon batch 152 deg for 1 hour. 1oz. hops at 60 .5 oz. hops at 15 .5 in primary. Ferment cool using US-05, bottle when done and drink in 2 weeks. This will get you hooked on allgrain and willing...

    Any idea what'll happen?

If you mashed at 140 for at least 2 hours, I'd say you are in for a pretty thin but high alcohol weevil stout. How did your gravities and iodine tests turn out?

    Nottingham Esters

I had 3 beers I did last spring with Notty and all 3 had that clove taste in the finished beer. Temps were getting a little warm so I do blame most of it on that, but made for some dissapointing cream ales. Might be ok for a German wheat??? I never got that with Wyeast American Ale or Safale...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

I kinda thought the idea of a 60 minute boil was just for a bittering purpose. Kinda like a fake lager beer. I have on hand; Centenial Delta Celia Czech Saaz Warrior Fuggles. German Northern Brewer. Any suggestions?

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Giving this a go today. Recipe will be; 5.5lb 2 row 2 lb. flaked corn 3/4 lb. minute rice .33 oz Pacific Jade hops @ 14.2 AA for 60 minutes. I was going to pitch this on a Notty slurry but I have found that my Wyeast 1056 Amarican Ale yeast smack pack is swollen up in my fridge. I use...

How much are you paying for CO2?

20# costs 16 bucks, but that was 5 years ago.. Don't know what they will charge me now because they have to retest the tanks and that cost more than the fill.
