    Munich or Crystal in IPA?

Hadn't considered Vienna. So I guess it all comes down to what I want to accent the MO and hops with. Crystal 60L (or variation)- 'This medium Crystal malt will lend a well rounded caramel flavor, color and sweetness.' Munich- 'Munich Malt has a malty sweet flavor characteristic and adds...

    Munich or Crystal in IPA?

Good point. I'm trying to keep it to two grains for this one, for scientific purposes. That way next time when I make an addition I can theoretically tell what it contributed. IPA's are generally mashed lower, around 150 right? So maybe 152-4? I don't mind if it's a little light. Would the...

    Munich or Crystal in IPA?

l think I'm going to go with 12.5 MO and 1.5 Munich for this one, as for what I have in mind drier sound better. Maybe next time I'll add a few ounces of Crystal as well and see what it contributes.

    Munich or Crystal in IPA?

Thanks for the reply. I'm also curious about the difference in flavor between the two as far as sweetness goes. In what way did you notice the crystal detract from the hops? This is going to be something I build on and experiment with as time goes on, I'm just trying to establish a good base...

    Munich or Crystal in IPA?

Hello all. I going to brew an American IPA this weekend and had a question about my grain bill. I want it to be a fairly simple, dry-ish easy drinking summer IPA with a nice citrus flavor and touch of malt sweetness in the background. I'm thinking about using about 12 lbs of MO, with 1 lb of...

    Yeast Starter Fiasco

I should have done that, didn't think of it. But I'm a paranoid person; I'm sure it's fine. Brought it down to 1.044 and pitched it just now. Re-sanitized all my tools of course. Here's hoping. Starsan's contact time is a minute right? It was longer than that in reality anyway just curious.

    Yeast Starter Fiasco

Everything was submerged in starsan prior to use so it should be good. I feel better. Thanks everyone.

    Yeast Starter Fiasco

So I'm good even though it will have sat there about an hour or so without yeast?

    Yeast Starter Fiasco

So I haven't brewed in over a year and today is yeast starter day for the ESB I'm making. If today is indicative of brew day though I'm in for a rough one. Lost half a liter to a boil over and had to hammer my long since used DME back into powder and ended up with an OG in the 1.06 range. And...

    Adding Character to SMaSH ESB

I wasn't sure what volume to use though so thank you. I'm intrigued by this idea.

    Adding Character to SMaSH ESB

No, not really. I just want it to be as basic as possible on this first one so I can build on it later and be able to tell what changed or how the additions I made affected the recipe. So maybe you're right, I'm looking to much into it at this point. (I'm not sure how this got bumped to the...

    Adding Character to SMaSH ESB

Hm. I was planning on doing a no-sparge this first time and seeing how it went, but if I took some wort out a bit before the mash is done (at 60 minutes into a 90 minute mash?) and boiled it would I reach the same end? How much/long would I need for there to be a noticeable change? I know with a...

    Adding Character to SMaSH ESB

Hello all. I'm planning my first all-grain (BIAB) and want to start with a SMaSH ESB. Obviously, the recipe is pretty straight forward. But I still want it to fit the style in more than just name and I was wondering if there were any tips on adding an ESB character to the brew without adding...

Best pale base malt for 'malty' beers I can SMaSH with?

Looks like we have a winner. I'll keep Munich and Vienna in mind too.

Best pale base malt for 'malty' beers I can SMaSH with?

Thanks much. I can't wait to buy my new equipment and have a brew day. Over a year is a terribly long time to wait!

Best pale base malt for 'malty' beers I can SMaSH with?

Awesome. I was thinking MO. I realize there's a myriad of options for each style. So that will work as a base for all the styles I mentioned? Maris is an English 2 row right? So maybe try an American 2 row for comparison?

Best pale base malt for 'malty' beers I can SMaSH with?

Hello everyone. It's been awhile. I haven't brewed since my son was born almost a year ago, and now that I'm deployed it will be even longer. Needless to say, I've had a lot of time to think about what I want to do when I get home in a few months. I wanted to run it by you guys because I've had...

    The HOBBIT......don't bother

You did. I just didn't think it would be so horribly bad as it was, and I've been pretty forgiving. So sad.

    The HOBBIT......don't bother

This movie was so disappointing after all; and I am not one to pick apart movie adaptions. I get changes happen and I enjoyed LotR and the first Hobbit enormously. But this last installment was so disheartening. It was a complete fabrication, not an adaption. Wtf is the deal with Legolas and...

    Noobs Question on Steeping

Edit: I'm pretty sure you're safe from tannins as used to be thought a problem, but others can chime in on that. Oops. Or quote myself.
