which yeast starter calculator do you trust the most?

I do cell counts for all my propagations and they never grow to what any of the calculators predict. I get 10-25% shy of Jamil's. This is on a stir plate controlled to 72F. I've tried pure O2 at the start and constant sterile air pumped into the headspace with no change in growth. If you...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

This recipe doesn't need simple sugar or a high mash temp if you use Conan. The yeast does it all. Except flocculate unfortunately.

    cell count vs OG

There are 20 Billion cells/gram of dried yeast when the package is new. They lose about 2% viability per month (stored cold) and are 90% viable new. If you rehydrate in water, following the manufacturers instructions, you'll wake all of the viable cells. If you rehydrate in wort, you'll lose...

    Acidifying sparge water in HLT

From a Bru'n Water Facebook post: "WHY CAN'T I ADD MY ACID TO HEATED WATER? Bru'n Water users may have noted that the program tells them to add their acid to the water before its heated. Here is the reason why you should heed that recommendation or revise your process. When we have an...

Re-pitching yeast starter to clean diacytl

What you're doing is essentially Krausening. It's a great way to turn out Lagers faster especially if the strain you're using is more of a diacetyl producer like the Urquell strain. If you brew the same beer over and over, use 10% of your fermenting beer and add it to your conditioning one.

    Test Mash Volumes

When doing a test mash, is it more important to get the water to grist ratio correct or the overall water amount correct including volume under the false bottom for the regular system which is a HERMS? I'm doing a test mash with 3.5% of the grain, water and gypsum. The volume under the false...

    Washing Yeast with Chlorine Dioxide?

I'm researching using Chlorine Dioxide for yeast washing and stumbled upon this post. Here's another reference for those doing the same. Trying to come up with a SOP that I am comfortable with. Crushing up the tablet by hand and adding it to the slurry doesn't sit well with me. Also, it...

Pump or carry large batch to fermenter?

Clearing the line of wort at the end of the transfer is easy enough with CO2 or chase it with sanitary water. The only way I'd be comfortable with sanitizing that length of tubing would be with heat like Bobby suggested. For reference, I pump through a plate chiller and then a 50' coil of 1/2"...

    100% Stainless Heating Element

I received the Heet-o-matic 1500W element. It is in fact all stainless. The element will fit through a 1" FNPT x 2" Triclamp from Mile Hi Distilling. I had one from Brewers Hardware but it would not fit through. The element seems to be of good quality. When I get everything welded up I'll...

    100% Stainless Heating Element

Yes, I agree. They responded to me with, "We sell the element separately but because we are set up for small package shipping, there is a $200 minimum." Take your pick: http://www.hantover.com/cgi/hnt.wsc/product.htm?p-item-num=40830&p-callprog=cust-search...
