    Made my first bag

Was single stitched on a sewing machine. In the end it was big enough to put my pot on. As far as strength goes, based on some "pull tests" I think it should hold. I may try doubling the bag (since I made two of them) the first time just in case, but it appears to be pretty strong. It was...

    Made my first bag

Was surprisingly easy. Got the voile curtain from Lowes for $10 and was able to make 2 bags out of it. Each end has pockets already sewn in it for the curtain rod and so I was able to just thread some webbing through them and use then for a sinch strap. I could have easily gotten another bag...

How to make my oatmeal stout stouter?

Newer brewer here with a question (actually, more than one) about how to change the characteristics of a beer/recipe. I recently brewed "McQuackers Oatmeal Stout" out of "Brewing Classic Styles". I brewed the extract + specialty grains version of the recipe. Everything appeared to go well...

    Wow

First off let me thank whoever invented the "bottle beer out of a keg with a racking cane" thing. I tried it for the first time and WOW that was easy. Very convenient, and cheap. It only cost me about 50 cents for the stopper. Pure genius! Second, my question. I can see me bottling a LOT...

    Winter brewing in garage

Thanks for all the replies. I feel more comfortable now. I may throw a drop cloth over the table saw just to be safer. I am aware of the CO concern, but it never hurts to mention it again (better safe than sorry). Sounds like I'm moving out once I get my kit. THANKS!

    Winter brewing in garage

It seems that with each new batch of beer I brew, I have a need to go to " the next level". Right now "the next level" is full boils. I am fairly set on the 32qt (8gal) pot for the full boils but am also considering where to do this. I am pretty sure I could get away with doing it on our gas...

Best books on all grain brewing

I have read the basics (How to Brew, Brewing Classic Styles, Complete Joy, etc) but was wondering if there is a good book out there on how to make the jump to all grain. I have learned a lot from reading the boards and watching videos, but I am looking for some reading to take my brewing to the...

    Recipe question

I am preparing to brew "McQuackers Oatmeal Stout" from "Brewing Classic Styles" and have some questions about the recipe. Hope that someone out there can help out. Kind of a noob here so any help is greatly appreciated. First, they call for English Pale Ale LME (3.5 degL). I can't seem to...

Easiest beer I have ever made recipe

Just made the extract version for the first time. Can't wait to see how it works out.:tank:

First time kegging and have some questions

Don't know if this should go in the Beginner forum or not, but this place seemed logical as well. First, this is my first batch of brew in a LONG time. Made a recipe American Pale Ale from steeped grains and extracts. It has been conditioning in primary for 4 weeks come Sunday and I would...

    Question about fermentation...

    Excellent. Thanks for the confirmation.

    Question about fermentation...

Would it still be bubbling if fermentation was over? This is my first batch in like 15 years and so I just dont remember.:drunk: Thanks

    Question about fermentation...

I assume the answer to my question will be to 1, relax and 2, wait but I will ask it anyway. ;) I started my batch on Nov 6 and its still bubbling (slowly). It didn't start for about 36 hours, but then started bubbling nicely. Then I thought it was stop after a few days, but its been almost...

    Noob question about hop addition

Thanks all! That is exactly what it seemed like (a shaken-up 2-liter of soda). I should have known better I guess. Will crack it even slower next time. I also think I will just add the hops to the wort directly next time. Was a lot of futzing around with different additions and time...

    Noob question about hop addition

I did my first batch yesterday and all went relatively well I think. I had a couple of questions though. 1. I used whole hops (not pellets). I tried to add them in a hop bag (a piece of plastic mesh). The original idea was to help clarity/reduce trub by not leaving the hops in there...

    Fermentation Temp for First Brew

I was thinking that. I have read that 5 or even 10 degrees temp increase is not uncommon. I was hoping to avoid the ice bath, but it looks like it will be needed. My plan is to put the fermenter in a cooler filled mostly with water, then float a frozen 2 liter in there a couple times a day...

    Fermentation Temp for First Brew

Gearing up (litterally) for first brew (in like 15 years). Back in the day I did not know to care about fermentation temperature. Now I am finding out that is very important. I am using WLP001 liquid yeast in a basic Light Ale recipe. Basement is holding steady at 70F. Should I worry about...

    Adding spigot to fermenter

Thanks all for the great replies. Sounds like its a YMMV thing. I will try both and see how it goes.

    Adding spigot to fermenter

Total newb here so I get to ask the newb questions in the newb forum :D Q1: Why would I not add a spigot to my fermentor? Would this not aid in transfering to the bottling bucket? Would too much liquid be left behind? Is it too hard to sanitize? Why dont all fermentation buckets come with...

Aluminum ok for extract brew pot?

No expert here, but I have read a lot. I would think teflon would be okay, but easily scratched that would make it hard to sanitize. Other than that I would say its okay. Again, born again newb here.
