    How to make AMAZING IPA

I would recommend getting a water analysis from Ward Labs. All of my beers had a very harsh bitterness to them even using only modest amounts of hops. My water report came back and I had a sulfate level of 250+! Diluted my tap water with RO to get in the 50 s and have made some of the best...

    5 Gal BIAB Kettle Size

What is this pure definition stuff? Why not do traditional mash and fly sparge in a bag and ditch the false bottom? Bag, false bottom strainer... What's the difference? I can sparge with BIAB or multi stage method or I can do full volume do volume and add a pound of grain to make up for...

    5 Gal BIAB Kettle Size

I am switching from an 8 gal to a 15 gal. The problem with the 8 gal is there is not really enough room during the mash. You can manage this by adding water post-mash/pre-boil but I found managing volumes to be highly variable. It is an extra step that can introduce problems. The full volume...

BIAB - Full Volume and pH

How do you control mash pH on a full volume BIAB mash? Looking at a BrunWater it seems the pH will go up a good amount if you do full volume.

    Question for my California homebrewers

Fellow Cali brewer here. I bought a rain barrel to catch my water from chilling for one batch. Now I use a pump with a pre-chiller ( copper tube in ice bath) in front of my IC going back to the rain barrel so zero loss after first batch. You can also use the water for sanitization and...

    Water Treatment Question

Hello all, I do BIAB and I use about 8 gallons of water during the process. About 5 gallons for the mash and the remaining 3 added right before boil. Should I treat all 8 gallons or just the 5 for the mash? It seems like the mash treatment is most important and needs to be done for...

    Critique, Advice - Belgian Stout

My target was 156 but by my notes I hit more of 154. WTR to the candi sugar, the beer that inspired this creation claims to use it so if the second batch doesn't work then I will give it a shot.

    Question on mash rest times

Protein rests can be great for beers with lots of wheat/oats. But do the protein rest with just the wheat and oats and a small (1lb) amount of base malt. The add the remaining malt during the sacc rest. Or just skip the protein rest and it will likely still come out good.

    Critique, Advice - Belgian Stout

So here is how this experiment turned out. I added too much water to top it off at the end so it didn't turn out as I hoped. Overall the flavors I wanted were there and good but weak and so was the body. Overall everyone that tried it says it had good flavor but it was just too thin. I...

Water, Water Every Where But Not a Drop to Brew With

ThanKs for your thoughts and suggestions. I will try these out on the next batch. Speaking of batches I brewed a simple witbier two weeks ago and checked th FG last night. The FG was spot on but the beer tasted AWEFUL. Bitter twang, salty for lack of a better description and had a sulphur...

Water, Water Every Where But Not a Drop to Brew With

I had my water tested by Ward Labs and below are the results. It seems my best option is to start from scratch (RO/Distilled). One question I have is that it seems to me alkalinity seems to be the most important for the mash but other mineral content can be added during of after the mash, is...

Krausen Question - Anyone know why this is happening?

Hello, I am a new brewer (7 batches) but I am observing something I have not seen. I brewed a witbier and everything looks great but the krausen is not falling back into the beer. I am not worried but wanted to know if there is a reason for this. Is this common with the style? Every...

Thanks all for the help. Hopefully everything turned out good. I reconsidered and went to get some Bel Pils instead of the pale malt but they the LBS was sold out!! So I used what I had available in stock. So here is what I ended up with. Total Grain Weight: 10 lbs 8.0 oz Total...

Thanks for the inputs A.J. I am getting my water tested to see what comes out of the tap. Until then I will also look at my recipes to see what can be worked there.

    A Brewing Water Chemistry Primer

Thanks for reviewing and the input. I am going to get my water sampled shortly here and see what I am really up against. Maybe do a second sample in 6 months to see if they are tweaking the supply. Until then, what if anything can I do about the super high sulfate? All my brews to date...

    A Brewing Water Chemistry Primer

Apologize for the lack of description. My goal was to look for a process that would get me a correction that would work for either water source since I won't know what source I have when or how they are mixed etc. So I took the chloride values for each one and put the lower of the two in the...
