How water do I actually boil?

Thanks guys, that really answered a bunch of questions!! One thing though. I think I'm going to quit ordering from Midwest Supplies. I ordered my ingriedents yesterday (Tuesday), and the estimated delivery time was 3 days. So I figured that I should get it by Friday, and do my boil Saturday...

How water do I actually boil?

Ok I really wasn't worrying too much about this, and then I thought: If I add 3.3 pounds of amber extract, 3.3 pounds of dark malt extract, steep specialty grains, and add 2 ounces of hops, won't that increase the volume in the kettle pretty drastically? I have a 3 gallon brew kettle. I am...

    Ordered my ingredients! /Equipment Checklist

Well I finally ordered my ingredients today! I ordered the Big River Brown Ale from midwest supplies. If it's okay, I'd like to brush over what equipment I have now, and make sure I don't leave anything out once I start brewing this. I have the Brewing Starter Kit from midwest supplies. All...

    Cleaning bottles question

Well I'm about to start the first batch, and I have been collecting bottles. When I finish a 6 pack, I soak them in hot soap water and rinse them until I see no more bubbles. If I use dish soap, will this make the beer have a soapy taste? I have a friend that used to brew, and he said his...

Wanting to start first brew, but concerned

Thanks for the replies! Yes I do have a hydrometer that came with the kit, just didn't know how to use it. So take an original reading when the wort is cooled. When do I take additional readings? Do you just take an original and then a final gravity reading? When you take the final, do you do it...

Wanting to start first brew, but concerned

This may sound totally rediculous, but I have my kit from midwest and just need my ingridents. The only thing really keeping me from starting my brew is taking gravity readings!! Yes, go ahead and laugh!! = ( I've read the first two chapters in Palmer's book, but where does he descriptively...

Amost time for first brew, questions included

After the beer has carbonated, can I stick them in the fridge like a normal beer? Would the light in the frig harm the beer, even after it is carbonated?

Amost time for first brew, questions included

Well, as I posted a week or two back, I have my beginners brew kit from Mid West. Right now all that I need is my ingridents, one step, and a few more bottles. I have a few questions: 1) Well first, is there anybody brewing in the Baton Rouge region? I live in Livingston Parish (about 10...

    Got my beginners kit yesterday!

Thanks for the lightning fast responses! Yeah, I think I'll go with a Brown Ale. So use the plastic bucket for around a week, and then transfer it into the carboy? Can't wait to get my auto siphon replaced and get the rest of my stuff! Thanks guys, if I have any more questions or comments I will...

    Got my beginners kit yesterday!

Well I got my beginners kit in yesterday! I ordered from Mid West Supplies. One thing that sucks is my auto siphon is broken, I have to get with them (and soon) and get that replaced. I have a few questions. I have the 6.5 plastic fermenter and the 5 gallon glass carboy. Which would would you...

    Has anyone used this

Perhaps a carboy could be constructed with both ideas in mind. Have a lid on top like usual, and have an identical bottom as the top. This way you have your lid on top where the air is, as usual, at the same time having a funnel shape on the bottom to bottle and easily dispose of the sediments...

    More rookie questions!

Thanks for all of that information! I guess I will just have to adapt to the yeast thing, which is not a problem! Is there any way to minimize the amount that is in the bottle? Thanks again!

    More rookie questions!

Hey guys, how's it going? I ordered my kit today at work!! I'm so excited to begin my new hobby! Well I have some more questions to ask. 1.) First question is cooling the wort. After spending $100 after tax on the kit, I want to buy the 7.5 gallon kettle. I will also need cleaning agents, and...
