    Beginner Reached out for advice

I started with a 1 gal Brooklyn Brew Shop kit that the wife got me for Christmas so I started all grain and never looked back. After that initial 1 gallon all grain batch I converted an older cooler into a mash tun and bought a cheep 5 gallon kettle to do 3 gallon batches on my stove. I feel...

    Beginner Reached out for advice

One of the best YouTube video series I've watched was done by Beer-N-BBQ by Larry, he has a lot on all phases of home brew.

    American IPA Kessel Run

As a tribute to the late and great Han Solo I decided to make an IPA that paired Millennium hops with Falconer's Flight hops. I've never used either in a brew but the inner Star Wars nerd in me being a child of the 80s came raging forward. The name was originally going to be Millennium Falcon...

Are DIY Beer Line Cleaners Safe????

For the amount of time my cleaning solutions are in my HD type sprayer I never gave it much thought. I doubt the plastics are food safe like you said but they have to hold up to all types of pesticides and chemicals that people use for yard stuff. I also always run my cleaner through then water...

    is this normal

I would guess some yeast got stuck to the side. 12 hours would be really fast for any type of infection.

    Chicago area off-flavor testing

I have no financial interest in this program but this popped up on my facebook feed and it sparked my interest. https://www.cicerone.org/us-en/products/off-flavor-training-course There are multiple Chicago dates over the next few months as well as one in MI and NC. I'd love to attend...

I'm afraid I ruined my first batch.

Menards has food safe 5 gal buckets for around $4. I'm not sure how much stronger they will be but it might be worth looking at next time you're in a store.

Does all beer have to fit a BJCP style?

I've only made a babies handful of my own recipes so far but the BJCP guidelines have never crossed my mind. I use an app call "Wort Homebrew Calculator" on my phone as a base to not get to outrageous IBUs or ETOH levels but I'm still to new and uneducated to really know what hops, grains or...

    Grain scale

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W7IOV4/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I'm currently waiting on this one to be delivered. Its the same one my LHBS uses and I like it there. 55 pound max, reads in lbs, oz, kg and g but I use a smaller scale for hops. It runs on battery and AC power (included)

    first beer batch medicinal by-taste

If you have a fridge that has a water/ice dispenser with a filter that needs to be replaced it should filter out chlorine. I was able to slip some clear food safe tubing from Menards (3/16") over the water dispenser and extend it into my BK and HLT to get my water for brew day. You can also buy...

    Stored Yeast Acting Odd

So I poped open a mason jar to make a starter of some Wyeast American Ale I harvested in early November. As soon as I took of the outer ring the seal broke and the top broke its seal. The yeast in the jar started to bubble like it had some how carbonated during storage. I dumped the liquid off...

    Kegs?!?!?!

You wont find a solid answer. It's like asking how many miles per gallon your car gets and not taking into account different makes and models. Things that will off set the # of kegs are leaks, Vols, CO2 used to purge normal air to reduce oxidation, how you carb and so on. All in all the gas is...

    Which Burner Would You Get?

The only one I've used to this point is the Bayou Classic KAB4. I've been happy with it, from what Amazon reviews said its the same burner head as the Blichmann. Its all welded cast iron and so far has been solid for about 15 5 gal brews.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

After making a batch I can from Ed's original recipe I'm pretty sure I'll be starting another 5 gal soon. I bottled it cause I didn't want to dedicate a keg to it since it's my first non-beer home brew. Now I dont know if it will even last to be fully carbed:mug: When I started making it I was...

Age to buy kit in Illinois

Pretty sure my LHBS has a sign saying 21 but websites Ive ordered from never ask for a birth date. You can look for a blonde ale kit that should be closest to what you want I'm guessing.

    lets see your full Fermenters

Was told by SWMBO to have enough for my son's baptism party so I have a Brody Brown Ale II, Blue Moon clone and Ed's Aphfelwein rdy to go with Chicago Liberty (SA Boston Luger with Liberty hops) and an IPA in the keg. It should be fun.
