    Brew kettle upgrade

Thanks! That's one of them I was looking at (the 32qt version.) I was one of the thicker ones I saw, and you're right, it was right around $30. I think I'll pull the trigger today.

Introduction and first brew - piss beer!!?

Like these guys have said, give it some time and don't expect flat, warm beer to taste like it will when it's cold and carbed. Also, as far a I know, Dead Guy is a Maibock so it isn't really ever going to taste like an IPA.

    Brew kettle upgrade

I think we only have one restaurant supply around here, and afaik they dont sell cookware. I think I'll just hit the web and find what appears to be a decent aluminum pot. I know its not a definitive method, but I'll probably look at thickness and overall weight to indicate how solid a given pot...

    Hydrometer help

Sounds about right. Just read from the bottom of the meniscus and remember to adjust for temperature.

    Brew kettle upgrade

I'm looking for suggestions for upgrading my brew kettle. For years, I brewed with extract. I would boil about 3 gallons and top up with water. Then I moved to doing BIAB with some smaller batches. I've been using a 4 gallon pot. I just built a cooler mash tun and I'm looking to get a bigger...

    Partial Mash

Good luck! That's obviously their take on New Glarus Spotted Cow. A very tasty beer indeed.

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I'd like to thank Flyguy and anyone else who has contributed to this thread. I recently started wading into AG via the BIAB route. However, I'm a tinkerer and can't leave well enough alone so I wanted to move to a three vessel setup. After reading this thread(and about a thousand others) I took...

New Glarus Berliner Weiss - Love at First Taste!

I hear ya man! I was always a little leery of sour beers. I bought a 4 pack of this on a whim a couple weeks ago and I was instantly hooked. I've tried a couple other berliners (not to mention other sours) since then, and the New Glarus is right at the top of the list. I have to agree with you...

    Vienna/Northern Brewer SMaSH Hop Additions

Thank you to those of you that contributed to my thread "First BIAB=Failure. " Later today, I am going to apply some of the suggestions I received in that thread and see if I can improve on my terrible, low 50's efficiency. I decided to keep it simple and go with a Vienna/Northerm Brewer...

    First BIAB=Failure

Well, I think with the tips you guys have given me, I can look forward to some sigificant improvements on my future BIAB batches. Heck, this batch wont end up great, but maybe it will be drinkable. If not, it's just a few bucks and some lessons learned, nothing to sweat over.

    First BIAB=Failure

Alright, looks like I'm going to mill that grain as fine as I can while still being able to keep it in the bag. Now I'm getting anxious to try this again so I can get a batch that makes me feel a little better.

    First BIAB=Failure

Thanks for all the replies, it appears that there are several things I need to do to improve my BIAB. More than one of you mentioned the poor conversion of wheat. Next time I use a significant amount of wheat, I will definitely mash for 90 minutes. I also think reverand was on to...

    First BIAB=Failure

So this past weekend I attempted my first BIAB. It was a 2 gallon hefe(or similar to it) using 2 lbs of Pilsner and 2lbs of wheat. I mashed at 153 for an hour, raised the temp to 170 for 10 minutes, sparged and boiled for an hour. I dunk sparged my grains and squeezed the heck out of them...

Screwed up my starter, now what?

Thaks for the replies, I feel a little better about it now. One final question I will probably put my starter in the fridge overnight to let the yeast settle out. Since I wont be pitching today, is it okay to put 2 gallons in a 5 gallon fermenter until tomorrow, or is the headspace a potential...

Screwed up my starter, now what?

Ok, question #2. This was intended for a 2.5 gallon batch. I was going to pitch part of it and save the rest for a later batch. How is the cell count affected by what I did. Will the calculations on Mrmalty or yeastcalc still apply, or would they be different? Thanks for the replies.

Screwed up my starter, now what?

I recently started brewing again after an unfortunate hiatus. The last few brews Ive made used dry yeast. It's been a while since I made a starter. Yesterday I made a starter for a hefe I planned on doing today. Not being smart enough to go back and familiarize myself, here's what I did. I...

Economical use of yeast in small batches

Thanks for the replies. For now, I may just do what el caro does and make a starter and save the unused portions for later use. That will get me several uses out of each tube. Maybe not as many as constantly rinsing yeast, but not as much work either. US-05 has certainly treated me well many...

Economical use of yeast in small batches

Being the only beer drinker in the house, I have decided to try my hand at some smaller batches. I have varied tastes, so 5 gallon brews tie up too many bottles, limiting the number of different beers I can keep on hand. I'm thinking of brewing batches anywhere between 1-2.5 gallons depending on...
