    Partial mash?

Ah, that makes sense! So sparging becomes essentially a secondary mash, at a higher temp for a shorter time (which I guess it kinda is now, with the pour-through). Thanks for the idea; I'll give it a try next batch! Do I guess correctly that H2O added to the fermenter just prior to yeast pitch...

    Partial mash?

How do all these LODO techniques translate to partial mash brewing? My current hot side procedure is (for a 5gal batch): Mash 3lb grain in 1gal H2O for 1 hour. The grain mix is all specialty grains in the recipe + enough base grain to make up 3lb; convert remaining base grain to DME Strike at...

    My kind of brewery...

Not really on topic, since it's not homebrew. But it's about people who brew beer, and I found it funny: https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/virginia-brewery-beer-inspired-vulgar-complaint-disgruntled-maskless-customer

    Cold crash, gelatin, bottling

Either. Gelatin will help clear what haze it encounters. At room temperature, that's regular (?) haze. Cold crashing creates chill haze, so adding gelatin to cold beer also (helps to) clear chill haze.

    Clarifying homebrew beer question!

Whirlfloc and Irish Moss (carrageenan), isenglass (collagen), gelatin, BrewTan B (gallotannin), Clarity Ferm (endoprotease), and PVPP (don't ask) are all useful fining agents for homebrew. Here's the science.

    Removing barb fitting from regulator?

Well, removing the valve is not an option. It's cemented in as well, and there's no way to put the regulator body in a vice that won't mess something up. Looks like I'm going with duncan.brown's solution of a short hose and adapter of some sort to something a duo can hook to. I'm disappointed...

    Removing barb fitting from regulator?

I believe the ball valve connects to the regulator body with 1/4 NPT as well, so I could just attach the DuoTight there, and add a valve in-line, or use the one(s) on a manifold.

    Removing barb fitting from regulator?

I have a TOF regulator with a 5/16 barb gas output. It looks like it's just screwed into a ball valve, like this: I want to replace the barb with a 1/4 NPT DuoTight fitting for use with EVABarrier tubing. That seems simple enough, but when I put two wrenches on the respective parts, it feels...

    Home Bar Build with Kegerator

    Both of those are awesome!

    Auto Pouring Kegerator

Sounds like good stuff. 4 mm ID is 0.15625 in. Any idea where to find "e" the roughness of the interior wall, for use in this line length calculator?

What do you do with your spent grains?

One item of (unverifiable) Appalachian folklore is that "revenuers" would select targets for surveillance by the health of their pigs. The brewers fed them spent grain, and the distillers corn, from their wort/mash. If some dirt poor feller has fat pigs, he's a-brewin somewhere.

    Filtering Home brewing?

You don't need to filter to get clear homebrew. Add rehydrated Irish moss or a Whirlfloc tablet in the last 5 minutes of the boil. Alternatively, there's a (Australian?) product called BeerBrite, which appears to be unobtanium for home brewers in the USA, but for which a DIY recipe is half a...

Sous Vide Stick Mash Temp Control?

I also heat sparge water separately. When my partial mash fits in the pasta kettle, I put the grain bag in a colander over my brew kettle, run the wort through it, then sparge water (after it fell off one time, I made a jig from plywood, routing out a channel on the underside that fits over the...

Sous Vide Stick Mash Temp Control?

Wort is primarily dissolved sugars in water; just clean it well after mashing. This article mentions several people using Anova sous vides (my brand) for mashing, apparently for a long time and without deleterious effect. At the very end of the article is a tip for cleaning in vinegar...

When to cold crash belgian dubbel with WYEAST 3787

I brewed a dubbel with 3787 last weekend. I thought something went wrong when I had NO airlock activity after 24 hours. Turns out I didn't secure the fermentation bucket lid all the way around, and a similarly "volcanic" fermentation was spilling out on the back side! I secured the lid down, and...

Sous Vide Stick Mash Temp Control?

I've used mine on a partial mash several times (generally, 3 lbs grains in 1 gal H2O in a pasta kettle). Works well, but you have to watch for the grain bag getting sucked into the H2O inlet. I plan to make a sleeve of chicken mesh or the like to give the sous vide some space. I thought about...

    Hi.

Hi. 3dB Brewing stands for my (kids') three dogs. It's capitalized that way 'cause I'm also an electronics geek. This adventure started last Christmas when my daughter got me a Mr. Beer kit and Chris Colby's Recipe Bible. The ale was predictably meh, but it set the hook. I found a local supply...
