My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Thanks for the link. My local RS doesn't carry it (or the 50 ohm) in either location. When I brought up your link, it said out of stock online as well. Can't seem to catch a break. Used parts I had in the drawer, a 5k pot and a transistor. Easy hookup and allows full adjustability from full...

Good job. It is always satisfying when you can DIY your own. Post a picture of your completed project.

    Why low effeciency?

Wow, thank you all for the quick responses. A couple points I left out of my process; I did do a batch sparge/rinse with 2 quarts of 170 deg water. Boil time was 90 min, not that that has an impact on this conversation. I'm glad to hear that the multiple steps are really not necessary. It...

    Why low effeciency?

THis is only my second all grain batch but in both cases my efficiency turned out lower than expected. There isn't much consistency between batches as the first one used a cooler tun and this batch was a biab. The recipe is a hefeweizen or more accurately an American wheat since I used Us-05...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Radio Shack carries pots but good luck finding one with low enough ohm rating. The lowest I could find in my area were 5k. Hooking the pot to a transistor did the trick though and easy to do.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I am in the process of making my own as well. Of course I have to put it to work even before it is done. I wanted to harvest some bottle yeast from a batch of Irish Red so I threw this together to get it going. It is made from parts I had lying around. The potentiometer is the wrong size so I...

Using hot plate/magnetic stirrer to make yeast starters?

    New twist immersion chiller

FDA stamp or not, what is important IMO are the materials used. All the FDA stamp means is that someone paid a bunch of money to have something inspected and approved by them. If you can afford $500+ brew pots and quadruple digit brew systems, more power to you. Not all of us can afford that...

    New twist immersion chiller

Blauhung, thanks for the detailed input. I was aware that AL build an oxide layer but not that the Starsan would take it off. Good to know. My brew pot is also AL so that is a possitive. The water test is still probably the best idea to indicate one way or the other. I have contacted the...

    New twist immersion chiller

WPStrassburg, that is the best news I've heard all day. I believe you are correct in the type of core I have here. The manufacturer is just down the street. The company I work for supplies all the aluminum and like you, I too think it is 100% aluminum. Unfortunately, all my contacts are...

    New twist immersion chiller

I like the water test idea. At least it would confirm one way or the other. I'm not sure I can do the college method but I am sure there are other labs and mail in companies that will do the test. I know I had the water tested when we bought our house. That's how we found the arsenic in our...

    New twist immersion chiller

I appreciate the feedback. I am open to correction but I thought about this for a bit. Any oils from manufacturing were washed and boiled off in the test pot mentioned above. Of course it would be sanitized with starsan before actual use as well. As far as the solder goes, it is now [supposed]...

    New twist immersion chiller

Have been researching ideas on making my own chiller. Cost being one of the major factors. The standard copper immersion chiller being about the cheapest still seems a bit expensive. Plate and CF are just out of reach for me right now. In my research, it seems that speed is also a high point...

    Extra Hard Lemonade

Got to try mine finally this past weekend. This stuff can be dangerous. Goes down like kool aide bust at12.5%, it'll sneak up on you. I think I will have to try this with just some grape or other juice with less acid / citrus so it would be easier on those with the sensitive stomachs. With less...

    Base malt experiment

I am also anxious to hear the results. I think running the test the way you did so it was in the style or flavor you preferred was good. I tend toward the less hopy styles myself but your method I think is sound and gives you a good comparison without going outside what you are looking for in...

    Extra Hard Lemonade

Extra yeast and nutrient is how I got it where it is now. It tasts pretty good now and is at 12.4%ABV and with our activities happening only a week away, didn't want to wait any longer to bottle. I just need to watch for excessive pressure so I don't get any bombs. I used Groulsch bottles so I...

    Extra Hard Lemonade

I gave up on mine last night too. Mine did a little better and finished off at 1.039 for 12.4%. Mine seems a little sweet still too, but it tastes good. I bottled without killing the yeast to see if it conditions in the bottle. Used Grolsch bottles so if it conditions well, the gasket will leak...

    Extra Hard Lemonade

Well, I broke down and am giving this a try. Doing a 2.5 gallon batch in a Mr. Beer keg. Oh my! Temperature corrected OG is 1.134. Used 5 cans concentrate, 3 lemonade, 1 limeade, 1 cranberry, 5lbs sugar and EC-1118. Yeast seems to have started ok so I guess we will see.

What happens to yeast when pitching at 88 deg?

I have yet to make a wort chiller (no way to attach to faucet) but I found another "cheat" that has worked for me so far. I use the freezer packs that you put in coolers or lunch boxes. Just sterilize the pack and throw it in the wort. I have yet to have any problem with this method. I am open...

    Confusion from HBS

It would definitely be easier to cut in half but I only have one ale pail and a mr. Beer fermenter which is only 2 gallons. That is why the funny ratio.
