    Pickle flavor in my Pilsner

Thanks for the reply fellas. I used a keg to ferment this time because it was a 10 gallon batch. I think I didn’t clean it well enough. I mean it’s hard getting up in there to get it all clean with just a 2” opening. So my guess is your right, the bacteria that makes vinegar and my poor...

    Pickle flavor in my Pilsner

Is unintentional pickle flavor a bad thing in my Pilsner I just brewed? I kinda dig it. It’s like throwing in a half pickle in your glass of Stella Artois! Off flavor or ok?

    Low efficiency

So here's the story.... brewed a BIAB Pale Ale with 11lbs. Of fermentable grains. Only hit 1.046 gravity. After one week in the primary using 11.5 gram Safale US-04 it's only at 1.028 So here's the question.... Should I add some sugar to the secondary fermenter go up my ABV? How much, 1-2...

    Looks like white paint ....

So the only thing my smeller picks up is peanut buttery goodness. I can now see a haze across the top and little groups of tiny bubbles. And of course the "white paint slicks" are still hanging around. Probably nothing to worry about. And yes, my beer is upside down!!

    Looks like white paint ....

So if no colonies or chains or spurs coming off, its probably just congealed penut oil... sounds about right. It looks like white oil floating on a Black Sea of beer.

    Looks like white paint ....

I didn't take the air lock off and give it a smell... maybe I'll do that. Thanks

    Looks like white paint ....

So there it is in my secondary floating on top. After 15 or so years of brewing I have never seen this. just S o you all know, this is a peanut butter Stout and I added 4oz of peanut butter flavoring when inracked to the secondary. I have never done this before, so maybe this is normal, but...

    Dead hop rhizomes?

I live up here in Maine. Northern North East, so our winters can be rough. I know I didn't cover them up before it got really cold and that's why only half made it. So I'll need more rhizomes for next spring it sounds like. Thanks for your input. I have some Nugget hops right next to the...

    Saving a bad beer?

"Patience is a virtue". So after a couple more weeks under pressure and in the fridge, this beer seems ok. I mean it's still off a little, but it's now drinkable. I told my quests last weekend it's a mild sour and they seemed to like it. It's all perception I suppose. Thanks for all your...

    Dead hop rhizomes?

Rookie question for y'all. Last year I planted 20 Centennial rhizomes in April and by sept. 15th had almost 10oz. Of hop cones. Winter came and went and this year only 10 plants sprouted vines. I didn't do jack squat to protect them over the winter so I think they are dead. The question...

    Saving a bad beer?

"3. Is it sour or cidery? those are completely different in flavor and are caused by different things. " It's kinda like both. Like a sour apple flavor. I'm getting a beer fridge ASAP. I should have watched the weather forecast and used a saison yeast. I used Safale Us-05. If I...

    Saving a bad beer?

The more I read about fermentation temps, the more I think your right. Maybe I'll just convince myself I brewed my first sour... sour's are all the rage these days.

    Saving a bad beer?

Thank you gentlemen for the quick responses . I brewed a pale ale smash with all Idaho seven hops . My fermentation took place in the mud room of my house which normally stays between 65 and 70 however, we had a heat wave where it hit 90 for 3 days in a row. The mudroom hit 78° one of...

    Saving a bad beer?

Rookie mistake on my part... I kegged my last brew into a ball lock keg I just picked up on CL. I wasn't aware that I only had pin lock connectors hanging around. So I said to myself,"self... go get a ball lock connector tomorrow at the LHBS. Well one day turned into 3 and. Is my beer is...

Is there a calculator out there that can tell me this... I have a 55lb sack of pale 2-row. If I want to make an 8% IPA, what would my batch size be?

    Foundation Brewing Epiphany Clone

I tried this receipe and it didn't come out like Epiphany at all, but it was still really good. I didn't have a temp controller to do the whirlpool addition and keep it at 180. I just added that last hop stand and let it cool down naturally for 25 minutes. Not Epiphany but still really good
