I leave it for almost every part of the process. You need to be there when its starts to reach its boil to prevent a boil over but other than that its fairly hands off. When I'm doing a 5G batch in the 20g kettle I don't even have to worry about boilovers.

How big of a starter are you trying to make? 1/2lb of DME is more than enough for a 2L starter.

As m00ps said the pump does need to be slightly below the kettle so that gravity will prime the pump. Running the pump dry can also damage it.

This is what I do. I put mine in a 2 liter bottle filled with water that has a small hole big enough for the probe drilled in the lid.
