    Stupid Simple Stir Plate. ~$12

Generally two pin male ends can be used with three pin female ends. The two pins are for power and the third is for monitoring/control by the motherboard. Short story: you shouldn't need a jumper and I've never seen a two pin female end in modern setups.

    Stupid Simple Stir Plate. ~$12

Gavin, It looks like quite a few people have been reading this article, recently. See the attached screenshot from amazon. Funny that a computer fan would be bought by people also looking at flasks, stir bars, and project boxes. :)

Wine noob here. What to ferment in? Starter for yeast?

You're inspiring me to go ahead and do this. My LHBS has 20% off closeout on wine kits and you make it sound so much fun. What's another 6 gallons of hooch in the basement?

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I did the original recipe over a year ago. I let it ferment out and bottled (and primed) at about a month. It was OK but it really wasn't "all that." My wife and mother-in-law tried it but were all kinds of "meh" about it. So it went into storage on top of the fridge, then we moved, and during...

Problems maintaining temps in cooler mash tun

A couple other observations I've noticed in my own brewing: When checking the temp I always stir up the mash really well when checking temps. This makes sure I'm getting an accurate reading and also helps loosen up the sugars (or so I think). I've found drastic temperature differences from when...

The Joys of Brewing... In a New Environment

I just went through the same thing moving into a new house. The upside is that I no longer have to haul my carboys up and down stairs since I have a sink in the basement in the new house. The bad news is that each and every brew day has been a slight evolution in setup as I figure out what...

Metallic taste in ESB - but from what?

I had this happen about 2 years ago and I was also confused. The best that I could come up with is that I accidentally rinsed the bottles with oxyclean water instead of starsan water. I've been very careful since then and never had the same thing happen. Again, I would like to reiterate that I...

    Bargain Fittings

I ordered from bargainfittings.com for the first time last week. I figured for $5 shipping I would have to wait awhile and was surprised when my parts arrived 3 days after ordering, including a Sunday. Their prices are good and the website answered all my installation questions. My order was...

Can you ferment safeale 05 too cold?

Not US-05, but WLP910 can be brought down to near freezing temps, heated back up, and make a delicious beer. I'm drinking my Belgian IPA - the beer that I did that to - right now. Yeast are hardy creatures. Relax, Don't Worry, and Have a Home Brew.

How much trub do you get?

Same here with between 1/3 - 1/2 gallon of trub. And I full my kegs to the brim and have a thin layer of beer over the gelatinous trub. Gelatin is awesome.

    Recommendations on propane burner?

I just got the KAB6. I was going to get the Blichmann but my LHBS had a used-once KAB6 for 20% off and I get an additional 10% for being an AHA member. So essentially the same burner as the Blichmann, with the paint already burned off, for half the price. No brainer. As for comparisons to...

    DC area-Craft Beer Recommendations

Jailbreak is a good local brewery just up the road from Silver Spring. Monument brewing is good, too. I particularly like their Rye 51. You bring me out a few tallboys of Surly and I'll do your digging for you and bring you an equal volume of good local brews. For serious. I'm a born and raised...

    Homemade PBW Recipe

I have the same question. We live at Costco (4 kids) so if this is comparable to oxiclean free then...well I go there 2 or 3 times a week. Thanks for the thread.

    The Best Wort Chiller

@JaDeDBrewing, I've got a 100qt concord pot that I usually do 5 or 10 gallon batches in. The majority of my coil (50ft 1/2 in Dia copper) sticks out the top and my chilling times run about 15 minutes with vigorous stirring. Which of your products do you recommend? I'm blessed with cold tap...

    Best compliment you've received?

I brought in some bottles of Texan Punk Monk to the office a few weeks ago since some of the folks I work with found out I brew and wanted to try it. My boss came back the next day and started telling me about how my beer wasn't good homebrew, it was one of the best beers he's ever had. I was...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

WLP004 will easily get this beer fermented and clear (with a cold crash) in two weeks. I did mine at 67F and was bottling it up with no problems. I love that yeast for low-gravity, fast-turnaround beers. I did another 11 gallons this weekend but used pilsner as a base grain. The wort was much...

Wort dropped to 36°F with yeast

Thanks, all. With liquid yeast I almost always decant my starters so I know in my head that this shouldn't be a problem. But between this being dry yeast and the shock of seeing that temp this morning well... I needed a little encouragement.
