Letting Steeped Water/Tea Sit For a Couple of Hours

Hey, I was wonder what the consequences are for letting the speciality grain tea (I have no idea what the proper name is) sit for a couple of hours. I can't go through the whole brewing process at once, but I can definitely do it two separate sessions tonight. I wanted to steep the...

White Labs California V Ale Ok for Pale Ale?

Hey, I have a Fat Tire clone that I plan on bottling tonight and I boight a Pale Ale kit today. I wanted to reuse the yeast cake which is White Labs California V Ale (051 I think). So, would the cake be okay to use for the Pale Ale kit? Thanks E

    Wort chiller water temp

hmmm... What's interesting is that my stove gives my some problems too. It does the same thing with 4 gallons as it does with 3. It almost wants to boil, but never does. So what I figured out is that when it gets to that point, I move the pot of center from the flame. That seems to push...

    Wort chiller water temp

Did you use your thermometer to get an accurate reading from your tap water?? The easy/quickest part is getting your wort down to about 120* 'ish. There are a few threads around here with actual numbers. It will take longer getting your wort from that 120*/100* down to pitching temps. You...

How Do I Know If My Harvested Yeast Is Good?

Thanks for the advice. The reason I was concerned was because when I searched, I found posts like Zamial's. At first, I thought I was ok, but I ended up questioning myself. I feel better now. I ended up brewing last night and used half of the yeast. I haven't checked it yet, but I'm sure...

I kind of figured. I guess I was hoping that someone here had a crystal ball. ;) Thanks, E

How Do I Know If My Harvested Yeast Is Good?

Hey, I've been reading and searching the internet and it turns out that I didn't exactly follow the guidelines. I bottled a batch today and planned on brewing another batch right after that, then pitching directly on the yeast cake. I've done this a few times before with success...

    Bacteria? Yeast? Pics included!

I'm glad I read these threads because my first guess is that it was an infection. However, I'm relieved to know that it's only a pepperoni pizza.. :D E

    Re-using Safale US-05

From reading and talking to people. I actually should have said that I don't suggest more than 3 times. From what I remember, I heard that re-pitching yeast 3 to 4 times is ok. So, I leaned toward 3 just to be cautious. What's your opinion on the topic? E

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

    1) Nope. Every batch will act differently. When I first started brewing with Mr. Beer, I thought the same thing. I think Revy pointed out that every batch can be different. You can have split a 5 gallon batch in half and use the same exact yeast, and they may have different characteristics...

    Re-using Safale US-05

You should re-pitch yeast no more than 3 times. Some people suggest washing the yeast before re-pitching. However, I didn't last time. Some will also say to scoop out half of the trub/yeast before re-pitching. Again, I didn't. The rnd batch actually taste better than the 1st. I'm going...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

No. Use 1lbs DME instead of the booster. Acutally, you can add the DME and still use the booster or add 2lbs of DME. I have batch in the fermenter where I used a can of Mr. Beer (because I had it), 2lbs of DME, and a packet of Safale US-05 E

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

There's nothing wrong with their kits. Use 1lbs of DME or LME instead of their booster. It's a good way to get familar with brewing. Plus, you just might make your better half happy that you're using yor b-day present. ;) To answer your question, divide the recipe in half and fill the Mr...
