    Chugger/March pump plumbing question

Awesome. I still think I'll hook a hose to it and give it a shot first. I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good piece of stainless tubing by bending it unless I know it'll work.

    Chugger/March pump plumbing question

actually to simplify my question, will liquid flow backwards through a pump that's not turned on without damaging the pump?

    Chugger/March pump plumbing question

This is a little out of the norm I understand, but I'm plumbing my system and was wondering if this would work. I have 3 way motorized ball valves to direct flow and was curious if it's possible to pump from one pump (that's on obviously) through the OUTPUT towards the input of a pump that's...

    Is my first batch ruined?

chances of infection from the stopper are lower since the beer is finished with fermentation and there is alcohol in solution now. Probably will be fine, just proceed as normal. Since this is your first batch it won't be around long anyway, enjoy!

    Clarifying my Bicarbonate/Alkalinity for Beersmith

Thanks! It's ringing some bells, but way off in the corner of my mind. Time to forget everything I learned again. Thanks again, have a Happy New Year!!

    Clarifying my Bicarbonate/Alkalinity for Beersmith

There's no hint of chlorine in the water either fresh or left over night so I think I'm good there. Like I said, I've been brewing with it for 2 years with no issues. I was just debating about putting a filter inline with the new brewing rig. So if I understand your breakdown of the...

Best place to buy bulk leaf hops??

Yeah, I'm leaning towards 5 lbs. I'm a hop head so I'll use a lot, plus I'm getting close to finishing my EHERMS system to brew 10 gallon batches. I'm also quitting smoking, YIKES tomorrow! I want to try a bunch of SMaSH recipes to retrain my palate once I'm not smoking anymore so I can...

    Clarifying my Bicarbonate/Alkalinity for Beersmith

It's been way too long since quantitative analysis in college so I defer to the experts. I have my water report with the usual numbers but Beersmith is looking for bicarbonate as HCO3 and my water report has the following. Total Alkalinity (CaCO3) = 44 Noncarbonate Hardness (CaCO3) = 75...

Best place to buy bulk leaf hops??

I know this has been hashed and rehashed but I wanted to double check. Looks like for leaf hops the top dogs are freshops and hopsdirect. Pricing at hopsdirect makes it a no brainer compared to freshops unless there's something I'm missing. Looking at buying 5-10 lbs (I know this is...

    Question about AG Imperial IPA

Could be lots of things, but chances are if you didn't use a hop sock for an IIPA then most of it is hops from your boil. If you cooled in the kettle and didn't strain the wort going into the primary then you'll have hot and cold break as well. It'll be fine, you'll just lose some volume due...

    Huge jump in gravity

Not a huge jump if he's got a good active fermentation. It's not unheard of for fermentation to complete in 48-72 hours. The reason most of us don't follow the destructions and let the beer stay in primary is to make sure fermentation is complete and allow the yeasties to do their job and...

    GGGGRRRRRRRRRRR Stupid people!!!!!!!!!!!

So we got home from Christmas vacation on Tuesday to a non working water heater, terrific since the SWMBO and 7 month old boy are both sick. Anyway I go to Lowes at 8:00 to get a new thermocoupler after testing the existing one and finding out it bought the farm. They have a "universal"...

OK I did something really wrong with this heatstick

just test with the wires, they are connected to the terminals after all.

OK I did something really wrong with this heatstick

Don't feel too bad, I have my electrical elements potted in JB weld for my keggles, so far so good but I'll likely replace them with boxes at some point. Nothing like throwing away good money, just go out in your yard and pick some off the tree, have a few homebrews and enjoy your build...

OK I did something really wrong with this heatstick

The quick and dirty way to tell if your GFCI outlet is 20A if it has a slot on the side of one of the receptacles like pictured below. If they are both just straight slots then it is 15A. Another thing that crossed my mind is your ground. If you can take a pic of how you have it connected...

OK I did something really wrong with this heatstick

OK first things first. 1500 watts at 110V is going to pull 13.6 amps so you should be using 12 gauge not 16 Secondly, you didn't mention what size your breaker in the panel is for the circuit you're plugging into. Pulling 13.6 A with just your heat stick you'd need a 20A breaker for that...

How can i tell if my Yeast starter is ready to pitch?

looks good to me, just keep swirling it occasionally until you're ready to pitch. BREW ON!!

    SS hop filter!!

Good call. I think I'll just flip the thing over and use the flange as the retainer for the paint strainer when I build mine.

How can i tell if my Yeast starter is ready to pitch?

General "rule" is with no stir plate just swirl the starter everytime you walk by it. High krausen should be around 24 hours so you should be in good shape. Just give her a swirl everytime you think of it between now and when you're ready to pitch. I did exactly 2 starters this way and they...

    SS hop filter!!

sweet! I have the ol pvc unit currently but I'm getting close to finishing my new electric rig and I don't like the way it's currently constructed. Looks like I'll be heading to Lowe's tomorrow :D Great idea!
